Uploading documents to NVC/CEAC prior to interview

Hi there,

I have my interview coming up on the 23rd of August (had to postpone my original date for personal reasons) and I have a quick question regarding my spouses tax returns.

The most recent tax return I uploaded prior to DQ was 2019, but I now have a copy of a 2020 return. Should I upload this to the website prior to the interview or should I just take it along with me?

Many thanks!

If your interview is scheduled, just take the latest tax documents along with you.

I suggest printing a copy of the IRS Tax return transcripts. The embassy might request the transcripts like they did from us.

London is not doing anything with tax returns brought to the interview by IR1/CR1s. If they need something additional, like a tax return, they give you a 221g. Having a hard copy with you does not keep them from pausing your visa until you upload whatever they need.

Your I-864, as submitted, is valid beginning from the date the sponsor signs it. The 2019 tax return was the valid proof at the time you submitted. They should not ask for a new one.

and what can happen if you upload it before the interview????  At this point, is it not better for the OP to just take it???

Hopefully the embassy will be able to see it if they want it.  I’m not totally clear on what happens with uploads to NVC because I never uploaded or have personal experience seeing the site for myself. Other IR1/CR1 interviewees this year have been told in London that their W2 was not uploaded. They were positive they had uploaded and they could see it on the NVC account. Someone else mentioned theirs was showing but not marked accepted (??). I can’t remember the words for how they were marked and have no personal experience with how documents are indicated by NVC. Anyway, the interviewee had to upload the missing W2 again. Those were the weirder cases about W2s not showing up.

I don’t think so. Based on what maybe 10 have said of their London interview experiences this past year, taking it with you does not help if it is something the officer needs in the file. They give a 221g and say the case processing will be resumed when the document is  uploaded. I don’t know why the embassy can’t be arsed to scan and upload what is brought to the interview.

Thank you all for your responses!

If you think the 2020 tax return helps your case and you want it part of the record, I would upload it now rather than take to the interview as others have advised. Delays in processing are not supposed to make you do an affidavit of support over just because a new tax return filing date has rolled by. Make sure there is a W2 (or 1099) wage statement with a copy of the return, or provide an IRS Transcript.

Even if you have to upload something after the interview, it doesn’t take that long for your visa to get finished. They keep your passport and say you are approved pending whatever document they require. They usually get back to your case within a few days of providing the document. Another thing to remember is take the original civil document that was uploaded and checked by NVC. If you uploaded a birth certificate, don’t switch out to a different one for the interview. If you got a new police certificate, but the old one is uploaded, they aren’t the same document and won’t do. Remember they are verifying what is on file when they look at the originals so they have to match.

I just had this. I had my wife's 2020 return as well as her offer letter and pay stubs (she went back to the US in May as she got her old job back) + my offer letter from my current company for continued employment in the US. I was given a 221g and told to upload the docs to CEAC.

Uploaded to CEAC to the Applicants CIVIL DOCUMENTS section (I had uploaded them to the AOS section but there is actual text in CEAC about the civil docs section being where to upload additional requested docs).

And now waiting for AP to finish and the visa to be issued :)

Brilliant, thanks both.

I think I will go ahead and upload it as it will only help my case. I was just a bit worried that if I uploaded something to CEAC before the interview it might bounce me back to NVC and I'd lose my interview date, or something along those lines. It's easy to get paranoid about messing up when you are so close to the end of the process!

No, it wouldn’t cancel your interview date. The point made about CIVIL DOCUMENTS section is a great clarification. Thanks @An&Je
