Greeting , newbie here,

My husband and I are filing my AOS , my sister in-law will be a joint sponsor , as far as tax returns go , are transcripts necassary? She only has three years of her Tax returns and when we called the IRS today they told her it would take a couple of months to get her tax transcripts because there's a backlog. Can we just send her tax returns instead?

Transcripts are preferred, as they are proof that taxes were actually filed.  Are your SIL's transcripts not downloadable from the IRS official site?

Doesn’t matter how they were filed. She creates an IRS account and downloads the transcript

Isn't about filing online. You can get the transcripts from the IRS by downloading and printing them online. Go here > https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

My husband has an accountant, but we just went online to IRS.gov and downloaded his tax transcripts ourselves. It took 5 minutes.

As others have said, it doesn’t matter how she’s filed them. She can download them from the irs webpage. She has to create an account and make sure she selects “immigration “

Creating an IRS account is like camel passing thru eye of a needle. Getting them on phone is almost impossible these days as well.

Definitely get the transcripts.  The last 3 years would do.
