SSA Card Update before Passport

Hey all,

Looking through the posts and I see that most of the new citizens applied for their passport before their SS card.

I will be updating my social security card (with a name change) first before my passport.

Reason for me is that I ship to military training in mid May, and I must have my updated Social Security card and updated DL in order for me to ship.

In case you didn't know, here in CA in order to get a new DL your SS number needs to be updated first. Not sure if it's like that in all States honestly.

Hopefully I can have everything done before I leave lol.

The passport can wait for me until I come back.

Anyone else request their SS number first?

We don't have our SSN connected to our license here in CA either, the DL number is a completely random number.

CA DMV verifies all the info with SSA before issuing a new DL/ID, which is the issue OP had (his naturalization certificate with his new name doesn't match the info SSA has in their system). After a name change you can't just walk into DMV and get a new license in your new name, you need to update SSA first as DMV goes strictly by the info SSA has. It sucks, but that's how it is.

Yes, it does suck indeed.

I did not want to send in my SSA, but I honestly had no choice to get that DL. I can't ship to training under a different name. Lol

True, it will unfortunately be the same for me since I had a name change. Have to be done in order to get a new DL.
