Hello everyone!

My husband has been here for a few years and unfortunately is having trouble locating his passport. We are still earnestly looking for it, but want to start getting prepared for the possibility of ordering a new one from in the U.S.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where we could go to get a passport photo taken that meets the UK guidelines? Better yet, with Covid in mind and wanting to limit contact, has anyone here ever taken a UK passport photo themselves that worked when uploaded?

Any hints or tips at all regarding getting a new UK passport issues while overseas are very helpful and appreciated! :)

Search the Google play store for photos for passport app.  You can do photos for any country in the world, and send them to your local Walmart, CVS or Walgreens for 1 hour printing.

Don't be worried it says US passport photo in the title. Once you start the app, you pick the country you want to make photos for. It's free unless you want the automatic background eraser. I paid the 5.99 for the full app. It's worth every penny.

I renewed my UK passport a couple months ago (while still in the UK)

It would appear that the website has changed and you can actually take a photo on your smartphone and upload it to the passport website. The website gives very clear guidance on the specifications of the photo and allows you to zoom and crop as necessary. I thought it was a little bit of a faff at first because it kept asking for better lighting, but after a couple tries I was successful and am now in possession of a new (albeit navy blue) passport 🙂

Do have another look at the gov.uk website and see if it applies to new passports too. I imagine it might if your husband has had one before.

Good luck!

I renewed my passport a few years ago and sent US size photos which were accepted without a problem

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

As someone else said I'm pretty sure when I renewed mine in 2018 I could upload a photo taken on my smartphone and it allowed me to crop it per regulations directly on the website. You have to obviously follow the guidelines for background colour, being well lit (but no flash) and not having anything covering your face & head (unless religious exemption), but it was really simple process as I recall.

I have to send actual photos. Being a citizen of the UK and the US, I’m not eligible to upload. I had to ring them on the phone to figure that out because it wasn’t explained on their website. It just wouldn’t allow me to upload. It was the dual citizenship.
