First Works Baptist Church in El Monte notified police about an arson threat made on social media two weeks before the attack

The FBI is investigating an explosion and vandalism early Saturday at a Southern California church that has drawn protests over its controversial pastor and his anti-LGBTQ views.

A fire and explosion were reported shortly after 1 a.m. at First Works Baptist Church in El Monte, about 13 miles east of Los Angeles. Police responding to the scene saw smoke billowing from windows blown out from the blast and graffiti sprayed on the outside of the single-story brick building.

No injuries were reported, city officials said in a press release.

The First Works Baptist Church at 2600 Tyler Ave. was also vandalized, the El Monte Police Department said.

The FBI is investigating the attack, which it said involved “an IED,” or a homemade or “improvised” explosive device.

The church, a target of recent protests, has asserted that the government should execute gay people, San Bernardino hate-speech expert Brian Levin said Saturday.

There's been screenshots of the threats as well as Twitter leaving up posts of people doxxing the pastor in question.
