Hello,

I am filing for naturalization next year. My five year mark would be in June 2021, and I can do an early filing in March 2021. Since I currently live in the city where n-400 processing time takes forever, I am planning to relocate within the same state to fall under a different and faster USCIS field office jurisdiction.  My question is when do I need to move to the new location to meet the three month residency requirement. I am not sure if the three month should be before my early filing date March 2021 or the examination on the application (I assume the examination refers to the interview which won't take place until I hit the 5-year anniversary)

Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks

A. Three-Month Residency Requirement (in State or Service District)

In general, an applicant for naturalization must file his or her application for naturalization with the state or service district that has jurisdiction over his or her place of residence. The applicant must have resided in that location for at least three months prior to filing.

D. 90-Day Early Filing Provision (INA 334)

....

In cases where an applicant has filed early and the required three month period of residence in a state or service district falls within the required five-year period of continuous residence, jurisdiction for filing will be based on the three-month period immediately preceding the examination on the application. [15]

If you’re planning to file in March then it would be starting in December - count back three months prior to filing. Don’t forget to change your driver’s license to new place and get other documents supporting new location residence.

Actually you are permitted to move...as long as it is within the same state or USCIS district, the 3 month rule does not apply
