“why can’t he just get a tourism visa and wait out the process in America” 

 

I question the stupidity of people. This process is lengthy but, it isn’t hard unless you make it hard.

In reality, I think it would do many of us a lot of good to not only understand the immigration requirements of the United States, but also of some other countries as well. Australia makes the US look lax....Japan doesn't let anyone in easily, Canada isn't as easy as they make it seem through their Facebook advertising, and it seems Europe is really starting to get frustrated with the number of immigrants trying to sail their way to the shores.

I agree before I got involved I had no need to know anything about immigrations as the subject never came up. I never devoted the time to read about it because I had no reason or need then!

Oh same here. My first posts on VJ are super embarrassing, I had no idea that tourist visas would be difficult for spouses to obtain, for example. This whole process has a huge learning curve, that is for sure!

For a country of immigrants, Americans are dreadfully ignorant of anything related to immigration process other than "tHoSe DaMn IlLeGaLs". I recall one time that I had to explain to my acquaintance and his family that you don't just become a citizen or even a permanent residents just because you were here over a decade...I also had to explain my best friend about incredibly bureaucratic nature of American immigration, and it made him understand why a good portion legal immigrants are in favor of President Trump. This is a stark contrast to Australia, where things are much more straightforward and non-immigrants are a little more informed.

That's kind I'd true though, on the visa level. People from MENA countries (and some other places) have a much harder time getting a visa. Once they're in the US, it doesn't matter but the visa process is definitely harder for some countries. There was a thread this week about a couple, the husband is from Pakistan, and it took them 3 years to finally get the visa and it was an uphill battle.

I had this on the flight back home to the UK after we got married. I was a bit tearful on the flight, having to leave my husband of 3 days behind. The couple sitting next to me spent the entire flight telling me that we “just need to go the office and get my passport stamped” because I was now a US citizen because I’d just married an American and could stay. And they know everything because his uncle brought a bride home with him from the Vietnam war so he knows the whole process...

I get the same type of comments from Australians when they talk about my American husband.

 

 

if only being married to a foreigner gave you instant citizenship! 🙌😂
