How to obtain your tax transcripts over the phone if you filed from abroad (July 2020)

Hi all,

My spouse and I have spent the past few months trying to obtain our tax return transcripts for the purposes of my IR1 visa application. Because we filed from abroad, using our UK address, we are unable to register on the IRS website. Verifying our registration via mail is also not an option for us, and we do not have an accountant who has access to our transcript via IRS e-services. Over the past few weeks, we have called the IRS International Helpline (+1-267-941-1000) and have been told repeatedly by representatives that the IRS was not mailing our transcripts and it was not possible to fax the transcript over to us. However, when I called this week, I was informed that transcripts are now being faxed. Even if you do not have a physical fax machine, in order to receive your tax return transcripts in this manner you need to do the following:

1. Register for a 1-week free trial at myfax.com. This will allow you to create a US-based number that is able to receive faxes.

2. Call the IRS International Helpline and select the options for "personal account" and "obtain a tax transcript". You will have the best luck in terms of getting through to someone if you call first thing in the morning.

3. Explain to the representative that you are unable to register online and that you want the transcript to be faxed over. One representative claimed that this would not be possible, but then checked with her supervisor and confirmed they were allowed to do this.

4. Provide the representative with your myfax.com number.

4. Log into your myfax.com and click on "View Faxes" and your tax transcript should arrive (ours arrived around 10 minutes after the representative said it had gone through).

5. Cancel your myfax.com free trial before the week is up!

Hope this helps anyone else in a similar position.

Hi,

We tried your way, but it didn't work. The representative  said that they cannot send the transcript trough fax. She even confirmed with her supervisor after we insisted.

Maybe because you have filed from abroad, that option was available for you.

Thank you

Sorry to hear it didn't work. Yes, I contacted the IRS international helpline specifically as we filed from abroad and explained to the representative that we really had no other way of obtaining our transcript.
