Varicella Vaccine in the UK

My husband and I were looking at the required vaccines for the spouse visa and working out what he might need. The US requires varicella (chicken pox) vaccine,  but that is not a vaccine the UK offers. Anyone know how that works for the medical exam? Do they waive it? Will he have to get it once he moves to the US and send proof? Thanks!

For the UK it’s not required. If he has had chicken pox, he just mentions it at the medical. If not, they will just mark the form “not available”. Don’t worry. Almost everyone who goes through the London embassy is in the same boat.

Also if he had chicken pox as a child, he does not need vaccine.

Nah, you’ll prove positive for antibodies..

you can get local gp to do an antibody test for all vaccines and chicken pox etc you’ve had as part of school programs if records lost.. take the report to medical with you..

London doesn’t even require that. In my case, it was “have you had the chicken pox?” To which I replied “yes when I was 7”. That was it. No records asked for.

If he hasn’t had the chicken pox and the vaccine is not available in the UK then he will get the immunization in the US. That is what happened with my husband. They don’t have the vaccine in Haiti, we went to the civil surgeon in the US who said we could either have a titer drawn to see if he is immune (had the chicken pox) or get the vaccine. We chose to get the vaccine because he wasn’t sure if he had it and if he didn’t we would have had to pay for both the titer and the vaccine.

He says he did have chicken pox as a child. Glad it won’t be a worry at the medical check. Thanks all! So glad to have this forum. 😊

The clinic in London takes your word for having chickenpox. No written proof, no testing for antibodies as was suggested on here.  The vaccination sheet will be marked “Varicella History”.  Even if  no history of chickenpox, UK people still get out of the shot get with the waiver “not readily available”.  You (spouse visa) will be cleared for a greencard by the time you interview and get the visa so No to having to get it in the US. You will be done with medical clearance at the clinic in London.

No proof required.  A review of Health history will determine it or not.

YMMV

I was the same as above - there's no mention of me having chicken pox on the medical records I took in, as it was 20 years ago - but they take your word for it and mark it off. No need to do anything or get any jabs.
