N-600 for a Minor Child Inquiry

Good evening Everyone,

So I just applied for N600 for my minor child after I received my Certificate of Naturalization. He will be turning 14 in June. I was planning to apply for his passport once I get his Certificate of Citizenship. By the way, I am aware that I can apply for his US passport with my Certificate of Naturalization but I plan to do that after I get his N600. And for that I have a few questions.

1) Does he need to appear for the Oath of Allegiance ceremony? He will be 14 in June.

2) How long is the processing time? I checked USCIS and it says 5-13.5 months, wondering if it would be faster for a minor child.

3) Can they still deny the application? I have provided all relevant documents. This one is expensive so I don't want to do it again.

Appreciate all your answers.

Thank you.

1. No. He is a citizen, based on what you wrote.

2. won’t be faster.  It isn’t a priority for an overwhelmed agency especially since you have a simple remedy to get your child proof his proof of a USA citizenship. The longer you wait to get his USA passport (and passport card; highly recommended as this is backup proof of citizenship) the more likely the state department will RFE.

strike while the iron is hot and get him his passport book/card.

3. Sure if they lose the paperwork or if you made an error.

I have just received my son's Certificate,he is 13 years,he did not have to go for Oath, they will consider the age of 14 years when he applied!!.They just mailed it with instructions to sign for him and print his name and my name on both sides of his Picture on the Certificate of Citzenship!!!...But he will need fingerprints taken!!..Hope u sent only photocopies for his Certificate of Citizenship application bcoz the Passport Agency will need the oriignals especially the Green Card and your original Certificate of Naturalization when applying for his Passport

Usually they schedule the fingerprIts appointment 2 or 3 weeks after receiving the receipt but because of the Corona Epidemic,it may take longer since many USCIS offices are now closed for face to face appointments!!..But if u can get a "walk in" fingerprint done soon at an open USCIS office, it will really help because once all USCIS offices open, its going to be packed but once u have that done soon it will take 10 months though USCIS website says 13 months!!..Its good u applied for the Passport as well for him, they will send back your original documents though seprately with his mailed passport but the Green Card will not be returned but sent to back USCIS..but u will get back your original Certificate of Naturalization!!..Its usually hard to get denied, remember your son automatically  became a citizen the day u Neutralized, the Certificate  of Citizenship just acts as Proof of Citizenship not application for citizenship, the chances of being denied are minimum, the worst scenario is asking for more information like Divorce letters if u are divorced or Court Order showing u have Legal and Physical Custody etc...Hope this helps..

Thank you! I guess I will have to wait for the biometrics longer but that's ok. We'll wait for the corona issue to die down then we can do the appointment.

We already received an appointment letter for biometrics and went to do it at the end of Aug. We filed the application online at the end of March. Did you file online? I’m asking because I would have never known about this appointment if I didn’t have the online account. I never received anything in the mail. I saw the invitation online.

Mine is 17. Do you log into your account and there is nothing attached? Log into your account and Look at the receipts under the tab “documents” not status.  My status also has been saying the same as yours all the time, but I almost overlooked they attached Bio appointment Receipt above my first receipt for accepting  my application.

I actually thought that by the Aug we were supposed to be done with this process. When I filed it said 5-9 months processing time. Now after the quarantine the processing time went up to 9-19 months! I hope it will take only 9 and in dec we will be done, but if you think, they can stretch it all the way to 19 months. I’m losing my patience. I already scheduled an appointment at the passport office to get a passport. Waited almost for a month. Good luck with your process. Keep us posted!

1. No. He is a citizen, based on what you wrote.

Still has to take the oath (albeit probably just him, the parent/guardian, and USCIS officer present): https://www.uscis.gov/forms/all-forms/n-600-application-for-certificate-of-citizenship-frequently-asked-questions

What happens if USCIS approves my Form N-600?

If USCIS approves your Form N-600, USCIS will issue you a Certificate of Citizenship. If you are over 14 years of age, you will be scheduled to appear at a USCIS office to take the Oath of Allegiance if the Oath of Allegiance ceremony is not conducted on the same day as the interview.  If you are under the age of 14, you may not be required to take the Oath of Allegiance.
