I am a little confused where to go to arrange an acceptable (to the US consulate) healthcare insurance. All though investigating on the internet I have found very little help what is acceptable and how to arrange. I know its early days in respect of the new requirements but just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. I'm 70 years old and awaiting NOA 2 as spouse of US resident

Speak to your Spouse, can you be added to their cover?

Most America residents once they hit 65 qualify for Medicare based on earned work credits, not something you are likely to be able to do.

Otherwise you will be looking at buying through the Exchange, after 5 years you can buy into Medicare.

Thanks for reply; Nope Spouse only been resident for 12 months but no healthcare .... can you explain what you mean by 'Exchange'

It is a State based web site, in your case California?, where you can go and buy Insurance.  Basically buying Insurance is a State based thing. What does your spouse do now? BIG issue in the US so something to have thought about.

What if the petitioner doesn’t have an insurance? Could this cause you an issue??

Yes it could.

Insurance? Best bet would be to discuss the issue with a Insurance Broker.

That will depend on what is available and that depends what State you are in.

Any unsubsidized health plan bought through an Obamacare marketplace

If your income is above 400% of the FPG, then there is no subsidized premiums through the market place. If it's below that, then how could you not allow subsidized premiums to take place.... It's a bit like saying you can't deduct premiums on your tax return. If you want to pay full monthly contributions, but claim the subsidy at tax time whats wrong with that.

Presidents Order on Healthcare acceptable plans state:

Medicare Plans: but how can that be so when to be enrolled in such a plan you have to be over 65 years of age and have to have lived I the US as a ‘Permanent Resident ‘for at least 5 years in a row before can enrol

Any unsubsidised health plan bought through an Obamacare marketplace: So I assume that plans say provided by ‘Covered California’ are not acceptable as they are subsidised.

Catastrophic Plans: I think you need to be under 30 for these plans (except in extreme hardship) and the plan has very very high deductibles which make them hardly Healthcare insurance.

So for a normal healthcare plan unsubsidised (age 70) the premium seems to be around $700 per month (basic plan) !!!!!!!!!

Maybe the best way to go initially is for a basic short term insurance which for basic cover seems to be around $ 1,000 for 365 days.

What I am also a little confused about is coverage under my wife’s healthcare which is currently receiving some subsidy under ‘Covered California’ …. If I become covered under this would that be acceptable even if it is subsidised.

Not really looking for any answer on this forum just highlighting my confusion (and maybe others). I guess one day the government will be a little more precise what maybe acceptable (or maybe they won’t)

That sounds average to  low compared to what others in that kind of age range have posted before on the forum.

Curious as to how basic the cover is, as it seems very cheap. Remember you are not just doing this to get a visa -you are doing it so that you don’t face serious financial consequences if something unexpected happens. ER visits can cost thousands. Surgery can cost tens of thousands.
