Hi there,

My fiance and I recently had our initial application approved and we await details of the interview in London. Our minds have thus turned to the logistics of how we're going to manage the process in between my arrival and receiving work authorisation. The waiting times look pretty daunting but they seem to differ from one USCIS center to another. I note that the guidance on the USCIS office stipulates submitting to the Chicago lockbox. Does this mean such applications are processed in Illinois? Or are they then sent to a centre local, appropriate to the residency of the sponsor (in our case New York). In short, we're trying to get a handle on how long our wait might be by means of predicting which center my application will be processed.

Any help/guidance appreciated.

Thanks

Assume 6 months from date of filing to adjust, may be quicker, may be slower, but a reasonable time line.

The I-765 and I-131 will not be processed at a local office.  My understanding is that they all are processed at the National Benefits Center

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

I think you're a bit confused.  Here is a rundown of what happens:

After you marry, you send off the I-485 form (adjustment of status), which is $1225.  At this time it is free to also apply for advance parole and a work permit (AP/EAD).  The EAD allows for you to work legally while the AOS is processing, as that can take up to a year.  AP/EAD is currently taking 4-7 months, and will be processed at the national benefits center.

AOS is processed at your local field office.

Being unable to leave the US (and be readmitted) and work for up to six months after arriving is one of the main drawbacks of the K-1 visa.

The source of my confusion was this VJ timelines section, FYI.

We married in Feb last year, filed mid March and I got my EAD/AP in August (that’s from the NBC as stated above). I have my AOS interview this Wednesday in downtown Manhattan.

Right now, as reported by other VJ members, the average time is 146 days EAD processing.

Processing times fluctuate, and VJ 'data' is only as good as reported by members.

All AP/EAD applications are processed nationally through NBC (vs in local offices).  You will have your biometrics done locally however.

Not bad!

My husband's combo card took 4.5 months, but our interview took 15 months.

OP, another good resource for processing times is USCIS.gov.  You can click on "check processing times" and there are drop-down boxes for each form and local field office.  They are updated regularly.

That’s crazy! To be honest I was shocked we got scheduled so fast but I’m not going to complain, especially for NYC!
