US Mormon children killed in Mexico attack

At least five US citizens, a mother and four children, have been killed in a violent attack by suspected drug cartel gunmen in northern Mexico.

The victims were said to be members of the LeBaron family, linked to a breakaway Mormon community which settled in Mexico several decades ago.

Video of the scene shows a burnt-out car. Some victims may have burned alive and several more people are missing.

Local media say the attack could have been a case of mistaken identity.

LeBaron family members were quoted as saying a group of three mothers and their 14 children had set off in a convoy of cars from Bavispe in Sonora state and were heading to La Mora in the neighbouring state of Chihuahua.

So a family leaves the US because they don't want to follow our laws, lives in a drug cartel controlled area for decades, gets killed, and the headline talks about 9 USCs being killed.  I mean, they are technically USCs in name, yes.  But their actions seem to be rather non-US.

Not really sure why they moved south of the border.  There are plenty of locations within the US that have relatively large numbers of Mormon offshoot sects.  Colorado City, AZ comes immediately to mind, but I think there are some locales in TX and the northern plains as well.

I'm not 100% clear and the articles don't exactly clarify. This is a very old Mormon sect, that moved to Mexico due to their religious beliefs outside the mainstream (much like there are some of these sects still residing in the US today), the exception is this sect just chose to move to a place where they felt less touched by laws and had more freedom. They were there long before the cartels were (pioneers moved during 1890-1920s). It almost sounded like to me while this family might be a part of this sect, that they had traveled from the US to Mexico to attend a wedding which was within the main sect? The main landholders of the 'community' they set up in Mexico is Mormon dominate but is also mixed with Catholics and Protestants, and have given cartels a lot of pushback and their history with them is sort of violent. When I first heard about this I thought it was a missionary group as that would be common.

You'd have to read up on their extensive history and in old days traveling to Mexico and Latin America wasn't uncommon. They settled there, and so they remain without little resistance or involvement from authorities. They do indeed have sects in Utah, but the oldest remains in Mexico. They have also been under investigation for really bad things and do not necessarily welcome outside sects from Utah or Texas. https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-38526255  https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/fundamentalist-mormon-polygamist-under-investigation-for-murder-in-mexico-124379/

While they might say it could be mistaken identity, I'd say the cartels have reasons for a beef. They know who these people are and not everyone has been found apparently, so I guess kidnap for ransom (which has happened to this sect before) might be possible.
