Republican Steve King: if not for incest and rape 'would there be any population left?'

This was utterly shocking to me. While I strongly support a woman's right to choose whether or not to take a pregnancy to term, I also understand that other have moral disagreements with my beliefs and they are entitled to those beliefs so long as they do not restrict my right to terminate -- or not -- as I have in this country. But where I have a real problem is with people -- politicians, who wield power -- who say things like this. It is SO insulting to women and denies them dignity and agency. I would like to think most anti-choice people do not agree with Rep. King.

Quote

“What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest?” King told a breakfast meeting in Urbandale, Iowa. “Would there be any population of the world left if we did that? Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages that happened throughout all these different nations, I know that I can’t say that I was not a part of a product of that.”

King doesn't wield much power. Never did honestly and was always viewed as fairly useless and pretty bonkers. I hear Iowans are pretty embarrassed about the guy.

Yes, but it MEANS something to have someone who is an elected representative right now saying these harmful things. I understand he may be voted out, but right now, he is in. All the embarrassment in the world won't get him out unless he gets voted out, or does something so shameful even to himself that he resigns.

Yes, there are embarrassments on all sides.  King has always struck me as a bit of a looney, much like a Maxine Waters, or now “The Squad”.

I guess what I'm saying is, as a woman.. I'm used to bonkers talk from lots of different elected representatives over the years, and from those that tend to have the same mindset. Growing up in evangelical community, you'd hear similar viewpoints from many, but not all. There is honestly not a far stretch between Steve King and Marianne Williamson in the spectrum of loon. They both strike me as people who tripped out and fried something in their youth.

He may be an embarrassment, but given the recent news about Title X funding I am very worried about women -- especially poor or low-income women -- having access to affordable birth control, cancer screenings, STD checks (which are available for men too) because there are people who share some of Steve King's feelings about a woman's right to control her reproductive life. This isn't about federal funding for abortions (which isn't allowed anyway) but about the federal government saying doctors can't advise about a legal and safe procedure if a woman wants an abortion. And to what end?

Sorry, I have a lot of feelings about this. I used to volunteer as an escort at a clinic. And I never have to worry about whether or not I can afford my birth control, or a termination if I wanted one. It's other women I worry about.

Lol at the comparison to Williamson! I guess I don't have as much exposure to this kind of thinking. My parents were nominally Christian-ish, but I went to church really only at Christmas, and both are liberals. So this is really far out there for me.

Do you mean Title IX?  If so, I think the transgendered movement is making that law obsolete.

No, Title X. It has been all over the news for the past couple of days.

Never think for a moment that your access to reproductive rights are guaranteed or safe. It's always something that happens to someone else... until they come for you.

I wish I could add more hearts and a thank you for this. It's so true. I'm 34, and I never thought that my right to seek an abortion would be affected. I live in CA, and the likelihood of my rights getting affected during my fertile years is likely low. But you never know. Things can change so quickly.

No Republican should ever mention rape or incestuous talk again.

He is an idiot on the scale of Bernie Sanders and Aoc

Why seek an abortion?  You're an intelligent, mature woman.  You know what makes babies.  You know how to enjoy sex without creating life.  Seems like much ado about nothing to me.

odd that a discussion on reproductive rights centers on aborting a child, which isn't about reproducing at all......

There is something to be said about personal responsibility. If one cannot support themselves, let alone a child, perhaps they ought to just stay home and remove Tinder from their mobile.

It's not just the right to seek an abortion, but the right to obtain birth control too.

Men knows what makes babies too.  Unfortunately there's just many situations where they can't stop raping women and girls.

It's about the right to choose not to have your rapists baby.

Except the subject of this thread is about abortion in cases of rape and incest. Please do make sure you tell a  little girl that's been raped by her father to just ''suck it up buttercup'' and pop out that baby. How dare they not support themselves.
