Please do not get married if you cannot support yourself.  First, educate yourself, get a job or two.   Then help your mother get off government support.   Lastly, once all is that is taken care of, get married.

If you include your mother you must also include all the dependents she is claiming. Do you combined make enough for yourself, your wife, your mother, and all her dependents?

With her receiving public benefits she is a bad choice for a sponsor. It shows she does not have sufficient income to support herself and the dependents she already has so how will she support another dependent? Do her dependents receive public benefits also?

I'm a bit confused on how she is earning "good income" while receiving SNAP. SNAP is a means-tested benefit, meaning her income has be below certain thresholds.

Me too

SNAP is based on income

  • Gross monthly income — that is, household income before any of the program’s deductions are applied — generally must be at or below 130 percent of the poverty line. For a family of three, the poverty line used to calculate SNAP benefits in federal fiscal year 2019 is $1,732 a month. Thus, 130 percent of the poverty line for a three-person family is $2,252 a month, or about $27,000 a year. The poverty level is higher for bigger families and lower for smaller families.[3]

I'm confused. How can someone earning government benefits have a good income?

The point of a joint sponsor is that the intending immigrant will NOT become a public charge. How can someone not be a public charge if the person sponsoring them already receives public assistance?

Public assistance should be for temporary usage when a person is in limbo, not something to continuously live on (unless disabled or in a dire situation).

Do you think $50K is a good income?

It is still under the limit to get SNAP in Massachusetts for a family with 2 kids...

What about $78K?

... well this is still low enough for the same family to qualify for Section 8 in Boston.

"Good income" is very relative to your location.  "Good income" can be multiple times the minimun to be a sponsor, and still not enough in some locations.

  • 3 months later...

My income is low while my mother has good income $27,000. I want to include her as cosponsor in i864 affidavit application but she is taking public assistance SNAP as she had 2 dependents on her. But, if we both combine her and mine income as Annual household income it will be above poverty guidelines.

But, taking SNAP, can she become my cosponsor?

Someone using public benefits is not a good choice for sponsorship, as the point of a sponsor is to convince the consular officer that the immigrant won't become a public charge and use public benefits themselves. So, you can see how it's probably not a good idea to use a sponsor who cannot support themselves, let alone adding on an immigrant, without taking public benefits. Also, you cannot combine incomes of 2 people who do not qualify to make up a qualifying income. So if you don't qualify on your own as a sponsor, and your mother does not qualify on her own as a sponsor, you cannot combine incomes with her to meet the poverty guideline. Your options are you must find another, qualifying person willing to joint sponsor (someone who is not on public benefits and whose income is above the 125% poverty guideline for their household size) to sponsor your spouse, or find yourself a higher paying job that may allow you to qualify to sponsor for your spouse on your own

This. Mom can’t take care of herself/dependents and you can’t use government aid to sponsor your wife.  Find another joint sponsor or find a nether job.

I assume you are young and healthy.  Is there a reason you can't go out and get a job, or get a better job?  Having borderline income and already a public charge issue for your family will not bode well for Pakistan.
