I wrote out the I864 and my us citizen hubby just signed it.. does that make me the preparer, or is that only for someone paid to fill  it in?

A preparer is someone who is paid to prepare your documents.

I think some place like RapidVisa is probably a common example of a preparer people often mention here?

You pay them to handle your paperwork, but from what I understand they are not an attorney (although maybe they employ attorneys as needed).

Preparer can be anyone who prepares the form to be ready for submission. In your case you can be a preparer and fill your info on the preparer’s section but it’s OK too if you don’t fill that section. It really doesn’t matter.

That section is actually meant for people who don’t know how to fill the forms and have others prepare it for them.

I did 99% of the preparing for my husband and he reviewed/signed everything - we never filled out any forms (K1, AOS, AP, EAD) with me as the preparer and never had any problems. I understood it as a professional service like RapidVisa or if a legal rep was preparing on his behalf or something.

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered "Man.... Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."
