After 2 years of being marriage based green card holder my wife applied to remove condition. We received i751 stating her status has been extended and she can work and travel using her expired green card and the I751 form. Sounds easy. But before her green card has actually expired he traveled to home land and returned 2 days before the expiration. On arrival to US officer at passport control asked her if she is aware her green card expires in 2 days and my wife said yes and shows the the i751 form stating status has been extended. The officer was puzzled about the form and she asked her partner in the booth, which also had no clue. Anyway, they let her in but gave her reminder about green card expiration. Now I am worried since we are planning to travel outside of US and I am afraid my wife might have trouble entering back.

So the question is if anyone had any experience traveling with expired green card and form I751 and how did it go?

Do you have a valid extension letter (I-797)?  You can not use the I-751 form to enter the US....

EDIT:  Terminology is very important.  If you have the official I-797 which extends the expiration date of the card, you should not have any problems.

OP original quote said I-751 form shows status has been extended.  Terminology not correct but obviously it was a I-797 showing an extension.

Just returned from Vietnam and China. No problems, but some scrutiny of the letter. It's hard for me to believe that a U.S. officer wouldn't know the form - even a new one is trained on the various paperwork they will encounter. Maybe she was just being difficult.

My wife used the I-797 letter at SFO last August with no problems. Ditto with JFK a couple months earlier. Your wife won't be able to use the kiosk until she gets a new card, but that's the only "hiccup" she should have when she returns.

When we were in the throes of the ROC process, we went up to Vancouver, BC, Canada. My wife brought her valid Chinese passport, her expired 2yr GC, the I-797 Receipt, Extension Notice and a copy of our Marriage License. I took my valid US Passport. We had no, nada, zilch problems, issues, concerns, problemas with the documents.

YMMV

Thanks everybody’s for answers. I feel much better about whole thing

What POE?  My wife traveled multiple times on her extension letter until March 2018, and with the exception of one time at check in had no issues.  The one time at check in, the clerk asked to retain a copy of the extension letter, thankfully we had multiple copies with us, so it really wasn’t much of an issue, but it could have been if we had not thought to make copies.  Shen never had any issues with CBP, but she always came into Detroit.

Good Luck!

I had issues flying back home from Sweden since they didnt know what to do with the letter. It finally worked out after they called a supervisor.

But POE in Oakland was so freaking easy that I even blurted out a "really?" When he said I was good to go. He didnt look at any documentation lol. He then said "unless you wanna go to secondary, we can do that?" I said "I'm good" lol. Almost got myself delayed.
