Me either. I’m going to have to do a lot of research. Relatives have said I’m a resident of Canada until I get some kind of immigration benefit in the states. Otherwise, I’d be in some weird kind of stateless limbo, wouldn’t I? I have to be a permanent resident of somewhere. So my understanding is that I am a resident there until I am a confirmed resident here. I live here but the United States has not granted me any immigration benefit yet or said I can continue to live here permanently. Of course I could be way off and I’ll have to find out for sure.

But I am filing my Canadian taxes in the next week, and I am still claiming to be a resident as I am not technically a resident of the states yet.

I seriously doubt you are a resident of Canada.

You are not stateless, you are a Canadian Citizen.

If it were me I would look into the definition of residency.   I'm not sure it is contingent on the granting of some sort of immigration benefit

Yes, good idea. It very well may not be. I’ll look into it now. However, I’m still claiming to be a resident of Canada for the time being. Whether I technically should or not is a different story and I will look into it.

How does Canada know I’m not living there?

You live in the US?

You said you were filing Canadian taxes, do they not require an address?

Better check the rules -- and abide by them -- or risk getting into big trouble retroactively.

This thread is trending toward a possible Terms of Service violation.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

None of this appeals to me, believe me. The first thing I did was look for a private health insurance plan and turns out there is only one month out of the entire year you can buy health insurance, and that month happens to be at the end of the year and not effective until after my baby is born. What bad luck. That’s what I wanted to do. Not some sneaky way around and working the system. I hate that stuff. And I’m probably like many others who only even consider that kind of thing out of desperation. Nothing will stop me from getting care for my child so he/she will be healthy. I am waiting to hear back from my local hospital about their financing options and maternity package. I have an appointment with a midwife and am looking into a birthing Center. I am on my way to planned parenthood today to see what state funded resources I might be able to pursue. I am going to travel about an hour and a half to a place that helps uninsured immigrants with health care. Believe me when I say I’m going to do everything I can to avoid being dishonest about where I reside. I want to do this the right way and that’s what I came on here to ask about.

You can't adjust status in the US if you are claiming to be a Canadian citizen. That is like saying to USCIS that  you moved back to Canada.

And how are you going to file (or have you files already?) US taxes? With a US address?

You can pay cash to any doctor for your pre-natal care. You can pre-pay cash to a hospital for your delivery. Start saving now.

You may want to find a hospital and work a deal with them for delivery of the baby. My friend at work had his last child paying all cash. You would be amazed how cheap things are if you are a cash customer. Most hospitals will only charge 17% of standard costs for different things. If you talk to a obgyn see if they can work a cash deal, and then find a hospital directly. Another thing most hospitals will do is allow you to pay contracted rates for service ( the same rates insurance companies get thru them for being an authorized provider). I can get more details from my friend when he gets back from vacation, but I know he only paid around 3000 dollars for everything said and done. Even with insurance your usually out around a 1000 minimum as your deductible. Why pay 5-6 hundred a month for insurance if you can just get by until you have a job or employment that provides insurance. Not sure what type of rates you got off the market, but I'm sure it is pretty high.

Here on a K1? Need married and a Certificate in hand within a few hours? I'm here to help. Come to Vegas and I'll marry you Vegas style!!   Visa Journey members are always FREE for my services. I know the costs involved in this whole game of immigration, and if I can save you some money I will!

Thank you, this is very helpful. I am learning a lot about how helpful the system actually can be when you’re paying cash. I would never have thought. If you’re able to get more information from your friend I would be really interested in hearing how they navigated this situation.
