More usually, someone attends a conference and adds some sightseeing on. The way this poster cycled through his reasons for wanting to visit (starting with a friend in Canada told him to) seemed suspicious...

I agree. But unless he's lying, there's nothing he said that would break the law.

Nobody is saying he will be arrested for inconsistency in visa application or at a visa interview or 'breaking a law'; they don't even care about that. All the CO cares about is proving applicants will go back to their home country or visa gets denied.

I do appreciate all responses with intelligent ideals. No one wish to get denied any time you apply for the visa.. I am here to learn what I don't know but thank God lot of good and reasonable people here came up with good answer. One last thing,I need to ask...if someone got denied in other country embassy before apart from Usa embassy... does it going to get any effect to denied in Usa embassy as well???

Can depend on the reason for denial.  Also, do you have any family members living in the U.S.?

No way to answer that definitively. Some countries share info, some don’t. What might be a problem for one country might not be a problem for another. The US approaches visa applications quite differently to most other countries too, so there is no blanket “yes” or “no” answer.

US, U.K. and Canada share criminal, border and immigration information with each other openly.

So first it was a cousin living in NY you would stay with, now it's just a "friend"... these are the little details as to what is going to cause you issues and get a denial honestly. If here you can't keep a story straight when you can go back and look at what you wrote, how can you manage to infront of a CO who's questioning you?

Also from just a "friend" in Canada telling you you should go to the US randomly, to just being tourism, then a possible conference, now about what countries share information about visa's or denials... sounds like you're literally just fishing for best way to try and guarantee an approval. Just what it sounds like straight up from everything you've said and asked...and the CO will see right through it. They are very well trained to spot these things.
