I did not say "let's ban hate speech". I said companies like Youtube, and Twitter needs to stop these people from spreading hate just like they try to do with other hateful stuff.

 

The free speech part was me preemptively letting people know I was not in the mood of discussing with y'all who likes to defend hate speech as free speech as this was a horrible act of violence.

We were talking about the attacks in NZ so those were the only ones I addressed. If you want to have a discussion about hate speech, the definition of hate speech etc, why not create a separate thread on that and stick to the NZ attack here?

New Zealand has been dealing with the aftermath of a horrific mass shooting that left 50 people dead. On March 15, Brenton Tarrant, a reported white supremacist, attacked two mosques, committing the deadliest mass shooting in modern New Zealand history. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promised to change the nation’s gun laws, which are already stringent (via BBC):

 

New Zealand Attorney General David Parker gave the game away when he said a ban on semi-automatic firearms would be the most likely policy push. He later backtracked, but now it’s official. The government has banned "military-style" semiautomatic rifles. There is no wiggle room here, folks. It’s pretty much a gun confiscation program (via The Guardian) [emphasis mine]:

Two types of firearms are now defined as Military Style Semi-Automatics (MSSAs):

· A semi-automatic firearm capable of being used with a detachable magazine which holds more than five cartridges

If NZ can act so quickly why can not the UK respond to deal with there massive issue, knife crime?

NZ already has stricter gun control than the US, and yet this crime happened.  An assault rifle wasn't used in this shooting, so why ban them?

 

In NZ, one cannot own a firearm for self defense or protection.  Or "just because", as we can in the US.  One has to apply for a permit to own, and prove it is for a legitimate reason.
