Interesting, didn't know that. Many of the Russian nicknames don't make much sense either.

 

Alexandr(a) = Sasha

Vladimir = Vova

Aleksei = Lyosha

Anastasia = Nastya

 

Sasha has wormed its way into the English vernacular though, whereas Beto...not so much. Is he trying to show he has Hispanic cred or something? It just rubs me the wrong way.

His father gave him that nickname specifically so that he'd have the chance to be elected to something.

 

Beeto married the daughter of the richest real-estate developer in El Paso.

Beeto then got elected to the El Paso City Council.

He imposed eminent domain on the property of a poor Hispanic woman, then voted to give (sell?) the property to his father-in-law, who dearly wanted it.

Some advocate for the poor, the downtrodden, the Hispanic...

Beeto was also part of a computer-hacking group in his past.  This was known for 2 years and was intentionally covered up by Reuters so that Beeto would have the chance to defeat Ted Cruz.  Wonder if any Russians were involved in this collusion?
