U.S. Accuses Actresses, Others Of Fraud In Massive College Admissions Scandal

Federal officials have charged dozens of well-heeled parents, including actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, in what the Justice Department says was a multimillion-dollar scheme to cheat college admissions standards. The parents allegedly paid a consultant who then fabricated academic and athletic credentials and arranged bribes to help get their children into prestigious universities.

"We're talking about deception and fraud — fake test scores, fake credentials, fake photographs, bribed college officials," Andrew Lelling, U.S. attorney for the District of Massachusetts, said at a news conference Tuesday.

Lelling said 33 parents "paid enormous sums" to ensure their children got into schools such as Stanford and Yale, sending money to entities controlled by a man named William Rick Singer in return for falsifying records and obtaining false scores on important tests such as the SAT and ACT.

Singer also worked to present his clients' children as elite athletes, Lelling said. "In many instances, Singer helped parents take staged photographs of their children engaged in particular sports," he said. "Other times, Singer and his associates used stock photos that they pulled off the Internet — sometimes Photoshopping the face of the child onto the picture of the athlete" and submitting it to desirable schools.

This story has been cracking me up all day. Rich people crimes... so stupid yet so hilarious. Sounds like some major tax fraud too - large donations to a sham 'charity' were then used for tax write-offs. I know Massimo was charged.. but despite William H Macy somehow knowing or joining in this scheme, he hasn't been charged yet. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny-news-college-macy-20190312-story.html

Some of the details are just crazy... photoshopping their kid's head on an athlete's body for silly stuff like rowing or water polo. Then when the kid shows up to 'practice' they can't do any of it. Stupid thing is these people were rich enough they didn't need to do things like this. There are poor and brilliant kids all over this country that would dream to get into these colleges. I think the part that makes me the most enraged is they made it appear that their kids were 'special needs' and required lengthened testing times or could sit back at their house and have answers fed to them. :pop:

what I find surprising is that any of you see this as surprising .... this is no less dirty than donating a library to a fancy Ivy league school and then having your kid accepted to said school. This at least shows the #######-for-tat negotiations that have been going on for generations

What does this say about the kids?  If they stay in their schools, they will most likely be labeled.  Also, I guess these parents didn’t raise kids that could achieve on their own.

Well one of the kids basically fritters away whatever college life she has by being an instagram and youtube star. The other doesn't sound much better.

I don't find it as surprising as it is hilariously stupid. As you said there are typical ways a rich person buys their children into fancy colleges... wonder why they just didn't take that route? And let's face it, these colleges are good colleges.. places for excellent future doctors, scientists, teachers, lawyers and high-tier sports stars to be. But these kids all sounded like they are on the bottom rung... or at the very least a kid that just wants to be aimlessly normal, while their parents push them into things that they have no interest in and don't want to do. I'm not even clear on if these kids wanted to be there in the first place.

They didnt take that route because they could not get admitted because of their academics, no matter how much money they gave. Atheltes arent held to the same academic standards. The fact that Ga Tech even has a football team is proof of that

Wait...what?!?! What kind of college application requires photographs of students?? How does a photo prove anything?? I thought the only college application that required photos of anything was for art schools. 🤦‍♀️
