Trump releases budget seeking billions for border wall, work requirements for welfare programs

Ol Boy, Trump has done it now. Requiring people to put in 20 hours a week of community service, work or job training to get the Welfare. Cant imagine how the Dems will spin this. So now they will be on records as supporting illegal immigration and against requiring people to give something back for their free benefits

just federalize the rest of SS and raise minimum non-penalized retirement to 75 .. easy peasy, and raise the tax rate to 90% for anyone that makes above the poverty level, can't have people working part time for their own maintenance. $%%^$#^%  fat orange nixon mussolini

I've long said that able bodied people should have to work or put in some type of community service to receive benefits. I don't care if its picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks or whatever. Hard work builds character. I'd also have no problem with benefits for people who were enrolled in school or some type of training program, some legitimate sign that the person was trying to better themselves.

If AOC has her way, all that will be needed to succeed in life is to have no desire to work.

You forgot the full name!!!!!!!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I would add "and pass drug-use tests" to this excellent idea.

There are so many companies hiring right now who can't fill their positions (at least where I live) that the idea of paying anyone (except those who are disabled) to not work is totally absurd. I think if you want a dime of government assistance in any form you should be required to prove you are looking for employment or are going to school to gain employment. While your waiting to land a job or if your only going to school part time you can do some part time community service to pay back the assistance you are receiving. There is no excuse with our curremt job market for anyone to sit on the couch all day watching daytime tv while collecting welfare.

So are there any welfare programs where people actually just collect cash forever from the US government?

Food stamps are for food only (I mean you could use it to buy food, and resell it for cash...I'm sure some people do this), there's TANF (temporary assistance for needy families) but this is limited to a maximum of 2 consecutive years and 5 year lifetime limit...plus I believe it has a work requirement as well. There's ERDC (employment related day care) which also obviously has a work requirement, as it's for working parents who need help paying for child care and the money goes directly to the child care provider, not to the parent. WIC is limited only for pregnant women/children and it pays for food/nutrition.

The only things I can think of that are unlimited and last forever are SSD and Section 8/housing vouchers. Also there's Medicaid but again..that's not "collecting welfare" in the sense that someone is just taking a check of cash from the government....the money is paid to the landlord in the case of Section 8, money is paid directly to hopsitals and doctors in the case of Medicaid. SSD is really the only case I can think of where someone just gets a regular check directly to them from the government....there's the "earned income tax credit" but again, that's for working folks and it's a one time only payment after filing taxes.

Just curious which welfare program should go first according to the folks on CEHST? I agree that many programs need major reforms but it makes more sense to talk about the specifics rather than the nebulous "welfare" problem.

not so much money for nothing but products and services in kind for free...

it's not hard to qualify for Section 8 housing and SNAP, so room and board done, many places provide a cell phone with text for SNAP recipients, discounted internet access is available here for $10 for hi-speed if on SNAP,

free meal programs for school age kids if on any of the above, applying for camps, after school programs, college tuition grants if on welfare, discounted or free utilities.

I am curious what my extra income would be available to me if I did not pay for housing, food, phone, kids college bills, school lunches, utilities, phone etc ... I am thinking in excess of $1500/month

Exactly. I don't think it's unreasonable to require able bodied people to apply for jobs or do a little community service to qualify for those things. The one time in my life I collected unemployment (which I indirectly paid into and isn't welfare) I would have been required to look for a job and attend job training classes had I not been going to school full time. Why is this unreasonable for programs that actually are welfare programs? Whether you want to call it welfare or not how is it unreasonable to ask able bodied people receiving room and board (And more sometimes) to do something in return even if it's as simple as requiring them to look for work?

Adding all forms of assistance received in the name of welfare, it could well be more than the annual income from a full time job at minimum wage. So why would people be interested in looking for job unless there is some requirement?
