The EU will require citizens of 60 countries, including US, who can currently travel to the Schengen zone without a visa or visa waiver, to obtain waivers starting 2021. The program is called ETIAShttps://www.etiasvisa.com/

Here's CNN reporting on it (although they are wrong on a few things: it's a visa waiver, not a visa; it's for Schengen countries, not "Europe")

Just another method of making money from tourists.  Nothing new here.

We charge most Schengen country residents for ESTA so it's kind of shocking US citizens were given a free ride VWP to the Schengen zone for so long.

I'm bummed but it makes total sense.

I think it might also be better for security reasons.

My very first trip abroad ever was in 2009 to France. I was so excited to get a stamp in my passport for the first time. I walked into a room with a bunch of border agents behind glass and I looked at the agent, I was holding the passport in my hand (not even open, the only thing he saw was the blue cover and that it was a US passport) and the border agent just waved his hand in a kind of "OK you're fine, you can go" motion (he didn't even say anything) and didn't even check my passport to verify my identity nor stamp it. Since this was my first time doing international travel ever, I thought "Huh, ok...so I guess some other checkpoint border person will stamp it." But....nope, nothing, nobody ever checked! I was literally let into the country with ZERO stamp, no check, nothing! The French...lol.

It's still in my old passport to this day....no entry stamp, just an exit stamp from that trip. And when I exited France, they also never checked or asked why I had no entry stamp, just roboticly and blindly put the exit stamp in, lol. So it seems so making people pay and register online seems like a more secure way of actually keeping track of who is coming and going.

I think it's justified. It's just that they're making it tricky with all the classifications (Europe, Schengen, EU, EES). With ESTA we know exactly what we get - all of the US states. With this ETIAS it's like 26 random European countries. I'm a European and even I'm confused. (I know I won't ever have to get this waiver, but still)

Agree, the map thingy on their website is super confusing...why is the UK purple like the rest of the "European destination" countries? Clearly this would never apply to the UK.

Hoo, brother... Ecuador stamps everybody in, -- and, upon stamp-out, checks very carefully to see that no one overstayed.

Few years ago, Mrs. T-B. & I went to Peru via an extremely remote, rural* crossing from Ecu (admission to/from Peru was after some guys lifted a huge bamboo pole from the road).  Ecus can visit Peru freely, but U.S. gringos must be stamped in & out.  I was stamped in by a very young, bored Peruano border guard.  The next morning, when intending to leave, we couldn't find the guard.  The locals suggested that he was still at home, hung over.  We trudged through deep mud and cowpies to where he lived.  He was not pleased.  He took a couple of wild swings at my passport before he actually hit it with the stamp -- which was nearly illegible anyway because of his completely dried-up inkpad.

*There were some little stores right across in Peru.  We went into one.  While there, we observed a mama chicken wander in and out, trailed by her little peeping chicks.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Every time I go to Korea I get a stamp even though no visa is required.  I have only traveled through France once and they did not stamp my passport either.

As to the OP, I don’t see any issues other than folks needing to do their research before they travel.

Agree, the map thingy on their website is super confusing...why is the UK purple like the rest of the "European destination" countries? Clearly this would never apply to the UK.

Well because the UK is 'special'. They got their own rules and stuff... and this new type of VWP for Europe and upcoming Brexit will provide an interesting little headache for travelers to say the least.

Sure.. but I think there will be a lot of people that won't do the research. We take for granted our little blue booklets can get us anywhere. They are already having issues in the UK about raising awareness for new passports for future EU travel after Brexit. That website could also use a lot less wordy clarifying. It's just silly.
