lol did that 2 weeks ago. The dude in SF took one glance at my extension letter, finger print and that was it. Took less than a minute. Didn't look at any other documents. My passport and GC has a different surname but he didn't care.

Timeline

I wanted to chime in on the airline.  Quick story years ago when my wife had a combo card for a short period of time and was flying from Atlanta to Mexico City.  Went to check in at the Atlanta airport and airline check in agent had no idea what a combo card is and was about to deny my wife from checking in and getting boarding pass.  I had to school the agent on a combo card and convinced her to call a manager and after 25 minutes the agent apologized and checked in my wife.

The problem is airline employees don't understand things like a combo card or a 551 stamp and also potentially an extension letter.  In our case I asked for the phone number to the airline station agent at the Mexico City airport and called him to confirm they know about a combo card as I did not want to take a chance and the airline deny my wife from checking in to fly back to Atlanta.

Just my two cents

God bless

My wife flew twice with the expired green card and extension letter last year. Checking in with Air France and Alitalia took a bit longer than usual since they were not accustomed to seeing the gc + letter and they had to do a little research to confirm the docs were OK, but that was the only minor hiccup. I guess Cathay Pacific was more familiar with them, since my wife didn't have a similar experience flying with them a few months later...

No issues whatsoever with US CBP when returning...

Great ! you didn't need a transit visa to be at German airport for layover ?

No, You only need a visa to enter not for the layover, unless it's something new. Last time I was in Germany was in 2016

As stated above, your biggest hurdle coming back will be a check-in agent that does not know how to enter the numbers. Don't get stressed, don't get mad, don't get snappy. Also do not take "no" for an answer. Just stay polite and get them to enter the number on the letter.

Below is my quote from a different post. This was Jun 2018, but it still should hold true. I used to work at the Amsterdam airport so I still knew a few people there

Quote

Just got back from Holland on the expired card and the extension letter. I got to talking with the check-in lady and we decided to see when the process would be accepted by the system.

- Unable to check in online due to expired greencard.

- Gave my passport, she entered the data and it failed

- Gave my Green card, she entered the data and it failed again

- Gave my extension letter and that did the trick.

The border check was easy. I gave him the letter but he had already approved me before even looking at it. No trip to secondary either.

No not the Alien number. That one does not change. It's the actual form number, passport number or card number they need to enter. That's the whole reason everything goes haywire. If it would accept the "alien number" hings would be so much easier.

Just came back from Germany a few days ago. I actually crossed border in Dublin, Ireland. One of the two Int. Airports outside of the US to preclear customs. The Officer was very nice and welcomed me home. Just a few questions what i was doing in Germany and that was it. Very easy and great experience.

I traveled with an expired GC and extension Letter. (just as explained on your extension Letter)
