Do you need your SS card to update your SS record?

I haven't used my physical SS card in a really long time and I can't find it anymore. Do you need it when going to update your social security record after becoming a citizen? I'm trying to find out if I need the physical card before I subject my mom to going through all my stuff in my home country where it probably is (and then having her mail it to me)  . Hopefully a US passport and/or certificate of naturalization is enough?

 

And not that I need it, but will they give a new SS card and if so does it get mailed or given in person when updating?

No I don’t think you need it. When I was naturalized, there were people from the SSA waiting at the door with applications as you come out. I just filled the app and turned it in right there. They will mail the new card later.

you need to update SSN with citizenship ( also name change if its applicable ),  given this allows verification for new job

The lady at the DMV asked for the SS card. You can just request a new one if you can't find it anymore. I wouldn't suggest mailing that so request a new card.

After you become a citizen, for your next SS card you are expected to come to the SS office in person to apply. AFAIK, this SS card does not count against your lifetime maximum number of SS cards (10 or so). You do not need your old card. I brought mine and they never saw it or asked for it. 

 

With that new card (which comes in the mail) you can get REAL ID at the DMV.
