Covington Catholic Teen Nick Sandmann Sues 'Washington Post' For $250 Million [merged threads]

Teenager Nicholas Sandmann's family is suing The Washington Post, saying it targeted the Covington Catholic High School student and defamed him for political purposes when it reported on a January encounter on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial between Sandmann and Native American activist Nathan Phillips.

Ted and Julie Sandmann filed the suit on their son's behalf, seeking $250 million in damages — the same amount Amazon founder Jeff Bezos paid to purchase the Post in 2013. Of that amount, the lawsuit is seeking $50 million in compensation for the alleged damage done, while the remaining $200 million in punitive damages would be aimed at punishing the newspaper company.

In their complaint, the Sandmanns say they are asking a federal district court in Kentucky to help them "teach the Post a lesson it will never forget."

Responding to news of the lawsuit, the newspaper's spokeswoman Kristine Coratti Kelly said in a statement to NPR, "We are reviewing a copy of the lawsuit, and we plan to mount a vigorous defense."

I'm torn.  While I think what was portrayed about this kid was absolutely wrong, I am sick of lawsuits in America over stupid stuff.  $50 million for "damages" done?  Pfffft.

In general I agree with you, but when an institution actively tries to destroy an innocent person, there has to be a recourse.  This kid is 17-18, and in this current social media world, he will be facing issues for many years to come over the malpractice of WaPo and other major leftist news organizations.  Maybe it is time to send these institutions a message to cut the bias and not jump the gun with speculative news stories.

I agree that there should be consequences for the media.  But $50 mil?  First of all, they will never get that amount.  But I think a more reasonable amount would be like $10-20K.  Admitting publicly they wronged him would actually be enough for me.  

 

Now, if down the road, it was proven he could not get a job due to the original scandalous article, then by all means, go after them big. But I feel this is unlikely.

It is my understanding all media outlets including the Washington Compost who lied about what happened were given an adequate opportunity to retract their lies in order to avoid a lawsuit so I have no sympathy for them whatsoever. The amount asked for in the lawsuit may seem high but it has to be to make these media outlets actually feel the consequences of their actions and I am sure the actual amount paid out in the end will be reduced. It is standard practice to ask for the maximum allowable under the circumstances knowing that number will be reduced in the end.

Some people think the amount being asked for is high. However these media outlets have a lot of money and if less was asked for they would pay it as if it is the cost of doing business them continue to slander others without learning their lesson. They need to feel the pain for their actions as their victims have.
