Depends if the contract of carriage holds up in court or not. Luthansa's says if you intentionally miss any leg of a flight itinerary, they may bill you the listed price for the ones you used. It's standard in a lot of carriage contracts, but I'm not sure it's ever been enforced by anyone.

There is no similar situation at a restaurant since there is no contract agreed to ahead of time. On the other hand, we saw some people leave before their meal arrived recently when we were out to eat. It was busy and I think they couldn't wait any longer. Made me wonder if people order at a restaurant and leave before the meal arrives, would the restaurant have a legal case against them in court to pay for the meal. The argument for the customer would be don't let so many people in if you cant serve the meal in a reasonable time.

Absolutely a no brainer imo, if the restaurant takes too long that's on them and anyone should be able/allowed to leave.

This Lufthansa thing...wonder who decided this was a beneficial business practice. I'd fire them on the spot.

They shouldn't. It's an attempt at customer intimidation.   People flying do this all the time for many reasons, not always to get the lowest fare.  I know I have been on a plane flying XXX-YYY-ZZZ, and got off at YYY and stayed, as well as having jumped on another plane to JJJ.  Plans change.

And if a customer buys a round trip ticket to save money, then shame on the airline for selling round trip tickets for less.  If I'm shopping for a car, and two identical, brand new cars are offered at different prices, you bet I'll pay less for the same car.

Seriously, this should come up in court. Like with TBones example. They charge 30 different prices for the same thing and want to blame the customer for buying the cheapest. The judge needs to grill them on where this business model even came from.

I agree. I think most restaurants work this way intuitively. Seems to be an industry with an actual emphasis on customer service and retention (in most cases). Reading online and it seems it's not uncommon to even get the drinks comp'ed if people choose to leave because of delay or questionable service.

Now if restaurants worked like airlines, they would charge you for the meal you didn't get, the dessert they think you would have ordered, the time you occupied the table, and the number of drinks you might have had multiplied by the average time you spent waiting.

To realistically reflect airline practice, it would be $25 per pocket if you paid at the time of reservation. If you don't pay until the hostess is seating you, it would be $50. If you don't state your intention to wear pants until you arrive at your table, it would be a $100 charge, but you would have the option to have the charge waived if you agree to eat wearing only your underwear. Your pants would be returned to you after you exit the restaurant.

Airlines have launched a summer fare-war, with some tickets as low as $25.
  * However, it'll cost you an extra $200 to land.
  * At these prices, airlines will be swamped.  So be prepared to bring your own peanuts, lose your own luggage, and act rude to a fellow passenger.
