Actually the Soviet Union sent people to space (rockets aren't exactly eco-friendly), developed one of the world's few supersonic jets at the time (Tu-144) and jailed people who refused to work so....funny how that goes unnoticed by the modern day communist supporters today. Guess it just wasn't "real" communism. In many ways, the USSR would be considered a very socially conservative and globally competitive (especially in science/industry/military) country by today's standards, lol.

Get rid of air travel?  I hope she is willing to take a bus or train when she goes out to rally her people for support across the US.

Possibly, but I do know Katya certainly has no desire to go back to a socialist economy.  The one thing to remember is that the USSR far outstripped its economy trying to keep up with a mostly capitalist economy.  Socialism just isn’t economically sustainable.

It's just odd to me that contemporary communists are cool with folks who are "unwilling" to work. The whole thing about communism historically is that it was a worker's movement and for the workers by the workers ("Workers of the world unite!" etc) where everyone having a job was the end goal, hence why many communist countries jailed or gulaged folks who refused to work as it was seen as inherently wrong. So its just baffling to me where that historical switch from pro-work to anti-work came in to play. It honestly makes more sense to have a communist country where folks who do not wish to partake in the system are punished than a system that wants to reward absolutely everyone, even people who contribute nothing to society.

 

Basically, at least in the USSR, even though there was no competitive salary, people worked in order to be apart of society and be a good citizen, work towards the country's goals, 5 year plans and all that. Hard working folks and highly achieving academic folks were rewarded under the USSR, just in niche fields and with things other than money (access to getting apartments, a car, travel abroad, access to extremely good education and academic connections etc). My husband comes from an intelligensia family who was among the scientific and educational elite in the USSR (the type of folks who truly benefited from the system due to their mathematical and scientific achievements) but they are actually very socially conservative folks and would balk the concept of people collecting money from the state without working, despite being former communists, lol. So, in a neo-communist country such as what AOC is envisioning, one that would pay people who were "unwilling" to work, what would be the motivation at all? It's just bizarre. I find "traditional" communism more understandable from a historical standpoint (backlash against the Industrial Revolution, etc) than the system AOC is advocating for.

  There were some incentives.My father in law used to say hard work could get you better apartments and higher quality sausages.

My husband's family got 3 apartments in the dead city center, a super nice (by Soviet standards) car thanks to the grandpa who was a military vet, trips abroad to Europe....basically they lived extremely well in the USSR. My husband's father even made money during the USSR somehow, lol. He received a medal from the Soviet government for his achievements in science. He is a business man in Russia today all thanks to what he was able to establish for himself in Soviet times even though they (mafia state that came to power after the fall of the USSR) tried extremely hard to put him out of business in the 1990's, he had to literally fight for his life to keep it alive during that dark time. It's pretty fascinating to hear the stories.

 

I'm aware this isn't the norm and only happened to the god tier level science geniuses who benefited the USSR, the party and its aims. But still, makes more sense than AOC's vision.

Dude, don't get me started on all of that right there. I was on Reddit yesterday and today talking about one of the local sheriffs ending the program to help ICE. I was literally told to "stop spewing racist rhetoric" in regards to immigration and illegals. I countered with the argument that "he(I guess it was a he) was being racist by thinking that all undocumented or illegals are Hispanic because there are illegals from all over the world here."
