pregnant girlfriend

I’ve been dating my girl friend for a few months and she is now pregnant. She’s from Canada and the only way for her to get covered under my insurance will for us to get married. I was thinking of having her come here and getting married in Vegas. Is there any other way besides that?

However coming to the US with intent to remain and adjust status is an immigration fraud.

don't try to do it on tourism,  that won't end well.. Edit I took out the word visa bc Canada.

 

CR1 is the one you want but you'll be changing diapers before it's done. Consider taking work in Canada and supporting her,  see that ur ready to get married... insurance is usually cheaper than divorce.

Canadian healthcare is great. US insurance won't cover her while she is living in Canada.

I agree with everyone else that it is better for her to have the baby under the Canadian healthcare system than under your insurance. Certainly something to consider.

Nothing prevents her from coming to the US (Las Vegas or anywhere) to marry you.......but she can not come to the US, marry you, and STAY.......that is illegal (visa fraud).....A better solution is for you to marry her in Canada, then submit the paperwork for her to enter the US via a CR-1 visa......Time frame is 12-14 months from start to having the visa in hand.

 

isn't she covered under the Canadian health system?

Your child will be a USC even if born in Canada as long as you are a USC and meet the requirements. (others that know more will help with that part)

As a mom who's had kids in Canada and the US. (no I cannot speak for every state/province or hospital) Let her have the baby in Canada, the doctors and hospital treatment is much better in Canada. She can also have all the support of her family and she most likely will want and need it. Your family may be great and all (I don't know) but there is nothing like your own family at times like this.

Was there any intention to actually have the girlfriend eventually move to the US to be with you, regardless of the insurance/pregnancy situation? You are posting in an immigration forum so just wondering if there was plans for that as well. You can marry in Vegas or anywhere in the US, but she would have to go back to Canada after that and start a lengthy visa process if immigration to the US was the end goal.

I definitely second having the baby in Canada, because she won't have a choice. Whether you do the CR1 or K1, either way, she'll be having the baby in Canada because both visas take longer than 9 months. It is immigration fraud if she enters the US as a tourist, marries you and doesn't return to Canada. Customs will not even let her in the country if she tries to pull that.

 

Also, if she has the baby in the US as a tourist it'll cost her a bloody fortune.

Why does she need to be on your insurance? Canada's healthcare is way better so she should just give birth there and your child will be a US citizen as long as you file the right paperwork. I'm Canadian and I just got health insurance in the US. Giving birth in the US is EXPENSIVE. Damn this country's health system to hell.

You have only been dating a few months.  Marriage just for a pregnancy or an immigration benefit is not a good idea.  Be sure you are marrying for the right reasons and follow all the rules.  If you have trouble figuring out either, seek professional assistance.

As someone who once was the pregnant girlfriend in Canada, I will reiterate and confirm what others have said about the best plan of action being her staying put for now and taking advantage of the fact that she’s in a country with a great health care system and is automatically covered. What made you think she would need to be put on your plan when she’s a Canadian? I had my baby in Canada and we submitted our k1 forms while I was pregnant. Was approved after the birth of my baby and moved to the states when she was about 8 months old. It was 100 percent the right way to do things, and the only thing I would do differently would be to choose the spouse visa instead of the fiance. 

 

Also, obtaining proof of her citizenship was fairly easy and straightforward as well. We made an appointment at the Vancouver consulate that my now husband came up for. She was about three months old and we took her in and after just a slight hiccup where the officer requested more documents (middle school transcripts which I was able to email him later) I received her CRBA (Consular Report of Birth Abroad) about 2 weeks later.

Don’t try to do what? Get married? Nothing at all wrong with getting married whilst in tourist status.
