Rapper 21 Savage Arrested By ICE

Rapper 21 Savage has apparently been here since overstaying in 2005.. and has been living a double life. Apparently everyone thought he was a local rapper, born and raised in Atlanta. He's really from the UK. Shortly after performing at a Super Bowl related gig (and has a top Billboard chart album), ICE took him into custody. He had previously been convicted of a felony in 2014. Based on his supposed entry date, he would have been 12 at the time. He claims to have always lived in Atlanta with his mother and 10 other siblings.

21 Savage, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was taken into custody in a “targeted operation” in metro Atlanta, ICE spokesman Bryan Cox said.

 

Abraham-Joseph, 26, has claimed to be from Atlanta and has long been considered a local act. Just last fall, he gave free school supplies to more than 2,500 DeKalb County school students.

Obviously he rightly needs to go back home, but I wonder what the whole backstory is.. did his mother never tell him his status? Or is that whole story not even true either?

This is really baffling, especially as a successful person in the music industry, he probably could have obtained an O visa pretty easily. Sounds like there might be a lot more to the story than meets the eye. If he's overstayed and presumably been illegally working the entire time....that just raises a ton of other questions. It's surprising this wasn't brought to light sooner given the guy's level of success. He was even nominated for a Grammy apparently....how can someone be that in the spotlight and evade the system for so long?

I saw this story on FB and a guy was complaining because "Why is ICE going after a hard working tax paying guy even if he is illegal?" I am sure that the story was invented to make him sound like a local so he can garner more support.

How could he pay taxes if he is here on an overstayed visa...? Is it really that easy to do? That seems crazy to me. I sense there must've been a misrep at some point because it just doesn't add up.

 

With all of this guy's success and being an insider in the music industry which deals with getting foreign artists visas all the time, it's just bizarre. Do we know what type of visa he has been overstaying on?

Yes, it really is.  Though some folks will argue that it never happens.  Though I wonder if he really did pay taxes...

I got a work buudy use to be a member of the Black Mafia Family. Great guy and loyal friend. Turned his life around and is good dady. But has some very interesting stories

Considering he came here, when he was 12, I don't think O visa would have been an option as he wasn't a professional rapper then. Now, ICE is saying he came in 2005, and based on what he ''says'' his current age is, that would have made him a child. But we don't actually know if he is as old or as young as he claims. Plenty of people evade the system like this quite easily I expect. If he did arrive here as a child though, it would be interesting to know the specifics. Would he have been DACA eligible?

Well his entire 'backstory' was always maintaining he was a local. No one seemed to suspect. I did discuss this in passing with an attorney friend that handled complex immigration cases. His opinion is obviously the guy is screwed, but his current lawyers/representatives have made some odd statements to the press that makes him think he's not being well served. His main source of irritation is, if ICE is going to go after this guy, he could think of a bunch of other persons they should go after too, Justin Bieber included... but he knows they may not.

Lots of illegal immigrants pay taxes. We don't know if this guy paid for any. It's crazy how this guy had this whole invested backstory about his life in America! A British citizen would have been VWP eligible, making a B kind of more difficult to get... but my friend could only conclude it had to have been a B. Still wondering how he got here, again he always mentioned his mom and all the siblings. Doubtful we'd let a single mom and ten kids come into the country on a B. So...

One article claims he was expelled from an Atlanta school for bringing a gun to class at age 12, which is the age we estimate he came here. Wonder if that is even true. A interview/video purports to show his very young looking mom, who is absolutely British. So far there's competing 'theories' where he came from, one is from Newham and the other is Dominica. His wiki is an ever-changing mess right now.

That's the problem with telling lies, now everything he has claimed is called into question.

My friend thought that perhaps it was a B2 with a 6 month extension (but even we had trouble with this idea) making it a year?

A few people wondered about if he had ever left the US and came back in, which would mean he would have had some very fraudy paperwork. Some others stated that all of his touring has been within the US and they did not recall him ever leaving the states. From what I could dig up online there was a NA tour with Post Malone (ugh) last spring - BUT conveniently 21 did not attend these specific dates. Based on what I can find via ancestry - his mom was absolutely from Newham and I can see his birth record there. Nothing in Dominica or the states.
