Easy. Just shut off your furnace and run the space heaters.  Might as well know if they are adequate before you really do need to use them. You might need more, might be perfect...but at least you can be prepared and have peace of mind.

I guess I could do that if I really wanted. We're only 4 blocks from Walmart so I feel like I could always get a few PDQ if necessary. On the other hand, once I'm out there in the polar vortex, I'll wish I hadn't been so lazy.

This might rival statements by great orators and political leaders for its gravitas and wisdom:

"'Tis better to experience a polar vortex than an Occasional-Cortex."

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Well out of the frying pan and into the fire for us Dakotans tomorrow. Supposed to get 6-8 inches dumped on us tomorrow. woohoo! Wouldn't be so bad as I know other parts of the country get a lot more. But when you live on the great plains where buildings are few and trees are fewer to be able to block the wind you don't dare drive outside of town; visibility goes down the tubes and suddenly you don't know where the road ends and the shoulder/ditch begins! The exception is if you are a silly farmer like my dad who will jump in the pickup and go drive around just to see how bad it is lol.

It's also a good way to see who's "not from around here" from all the out of state license plates that get stuck in the ditch

Works out quite the opposite for us.

No way to really tell, unless one heats the same house with two different methods during similar conditions.  I will say there is a reason that electric companies buy heating oil to create electricity.

When I said electric wasn't very good, I meant cost per BTU.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, electric furnaces offer annual fuel utilization efficiency – or AFUE – ratings of 95 to 100 percent. Electric space heaters all have AFUE ratings of 100 percent. Assuming an electric heater with 100 percent efficiency, homeowners should expect to pay roughly $34.32 per million BTUs of heat.

Natural gas is generally sold in therms, where one therm is equal to 100,000 BTUs. The EIA reports that one therm costs about 80 cents per hour. Gas furnaces in the U.S. must have a minimum AFUE of 78 percent, though this number can go much higher. Assuming a furnace with a 78 percent efficiency, consumers should expect to pay roughly $14.02 per million BTUs of heat.

While prices for gas and electricity vary over time and by region, gas furnaces typically cost much less to operate than electric furnaces or heaters.

https://homeguides.sfgate.com/comparing-cost-gas-furnace-vs-electric-heater-61395.html

I've heated with diesel, propane, natural gas, electricity, wood, heating oil, and heat pumps.  Natural or propane are my preference, though wood is amazing (though much more effort).
