Tuesday night, local weather dude said that his counterpart in Chicago sent him this info:

 

Projected high temperatures (F.):

  Chicago = -13

  Siberia   =    8  (unspecified where in Siberia)

  Greenland = 14

  Antarctica = 29

 

Chicago + Siberia + Greenland + Antarctica = Houston's forecast low temp for the night.

 

And yes, starting this weekend, high temps supposed to be in the 70s all the way through Wed. or Thurs.

Siberia is quite large.  In Krasnoyarsk it is currently 0F, but in Abakan (approximately 400 km South of Krasnoyarsk) it is 12F.  The forecast for Krasnoyarsk is to be around -26F (real temp) during their morning on Friday.

Just the opposite for me.  Anything below 72 feels cold.  When it's down in the 50's, or especially the 40's that is just way too cold.

 

Kind of sad when I get up in the morning and feel so cold that I go to turn on the heat, and see that it is 70 in the house.  That's when I decide to just put on a sweatshirt and suffer in  silence.

We rarely get out of the 20s (Fahrenheit) here in the Carolinas  Which is cold enough to my southern bones, but I know nowhere near what others are getting.

 

Ironically, Paul's been finding it much colder than I have so far this winter here, and he's from Sweden.

It was 4 degrees this morning. Outside at the crack of dawn felt brutal with the wind. The heat pump can barely keep up so the house is in the 50s. Me and the poor dog wrapped up in bed with a heating blanket, hubby says the heat isn't functioning on campus, students wearing coats, and he's walking around trying to work wearing a hat and gloves.

“Heat” pumps really are not, honestly.  Once it gets below about 0°/32°, it is time for a true heater to be used.  Which I guess you know, huddled inside your blanket.  At least you have a dog to help keep your feet warm...

   I agree, heat pumps will let you down when you need them most.

This thread makes me miss the cold and snow. Over here in the Pacific Northwest it's just a predictable boring overcast, above freezing day. Actually, even the sun is coming out right now....it's been a very warm winter here.

 

We've been using electric blankets here to curb expensive electric bills. Works great so far but it's not that cold here, although there might even be snow here next week, so they are saying.

Have i mentioned to anyone its 78 with a gentle ocean breeze and the mellow sound of Roosters in the air.

I miss our old gas heater in the city. That thing always worked great. Our heat pump broke last winter, so this is the replacement unit. Can't say it works any better than the broken one.

Sounds great, except for the roosters.

Heat pumps are really just aircons run in reverse.  They are good for taking the heat out of the air, but not good for putting it back in, even when they are brand new.  They are rarely used in cold climates.  But pretty prevalent in the South.   And RVs.

  And the colder it get's outside, the harder it gets for the heat pump. Until it get's to a point where all they can do is turn really cold air into slightly less cold air. The house we used to have had one and it was good for about 2 weeks in October and two weeks in April. We had to run the furnace the rest of the time, unless we wanted to wake up to cold December air blowing through the heating vents.

 

 After the first year in that house, we just gave up on the heat pump altogether. It's an interesting concept, but unfortunately they work best in places where you really don't need much heat in the first place.

We actually have a furnace in this house, which we never use anymore. We tried propane for the first couple of years here and it just didn't cut it, if it got too cold outside the best we could do for this house was the low 60's. For a wife with raynauds that's a no no. So we said screw it...and went electric. Works much better now we're always in the 70's no matter what it's like outside. The electricity bill might not appreciate it as much as we do, but it really isn't that much more than the propane ended up being having to refill it twice every winter just to freeze.
