Once your case file gets to the embassy they will hold it until you get your medical etc done.  It is another chance to delay your case.  Jakarta is excellent at working with petitioner and beneficiary - it might be a good idea for both of you to email the embassy and give them a heads up about this.

All the holding they need can be done at NVC, so that the cases are joined BEFORE the child's file gets to Jakarta.  Proceeding through NVC before the child's case gets there is not advisable.  It just adds both complication and cost.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

It’s a plan B if approval starts stretching out.

Fair enough, but they can stretch far more than a year at NVC.  No hurry to pay any fees or do anything.  They can wait several months to do anything.  I would not pay any fee until the child's case gets there and is joined.  That way, the AOS fee will cover both of them.  All they really need to do is communicate with NVC to let them know why they are not proceeding.
