Not even the hard left UK media peddle that one.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I’m not saying the US hasn’t influenced VZ, but if you think we as a country are driving the train towards the wreck it has become, then you have zero understanding of what long-term socialism does to a country.

Post of the month, right there!

It would seem you also have strong feelings about socialism, so would this not apply to you as well?  Is your opinion, and that is just what it is, an opinion, just as biased.

Maybe you need to dig deeper as to why sanctions were first imposed.  It wasn't like Venezuela was simply minding its own business, I believe their socialist government that is or at least was heading to a single party system did much to bring on the sanctions.

No, because I'm not basing my opinions solely socialism being good or evil.  I am here pointing that not everyone is lock step with the narrative that Venezuela is all evil like the vast majority of so called independent US media. I have seen time and time again where the media narrative is one thing, and reality is somewhat different.

I will be the first to admit that the government in Venezuela is not perfect, but I really take issue with people just going along and deciding that socialism is at the root of all of Venezuela's problems when I know the situation there is infinitely more complex than what is being portrayed.

Socialism is in fact evil when it comes to a countries economy, it creates a very few elite folks that own or control everything, and a lot of very poor folks all dependent on their leadership, but at least the leadership elite make a lot of promises for more free stuff which is totally unsustainable.  Are capitalist economies perfect, not by a long shot, but at least the opportunity is there for everyone, and opportunity is all we can ask for.

Close, but highly debatable...

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

How could one talk with one Venezuelan, and conclude anything? the plural of anecdote is not data, after all.

Then talk to the "anecdotal" hundreds (if not thousands) of Venezolanos undergoing asylum hearings in the U.S. at this writing, or sit in and listen, or read their written sworn statements.

I am always amazed by the folks who promote socialism that will completely ignore stories from those that have actually lived it.

Not perfect, well what Government is perfect, this is a whole different scenario.

I would be very hard to think of one positive aspect of the current regime.

There is a very good reason there are not true Socialist or Capitalist regimes, they do not work.

You seem to have strong feelings about socialism, so probably not the best person to give an unbiased opinion, I would wager.

So today, about 4 or 5 hours after I posted my response to your post, I ran into a young lady (around 30-ish I imagine) watching a video on her phone.  When I said hi and asked her what was so interesting, she said she was watching local news back home.  I said, “Oh yeah?  Where is home?”  She replied that it was Venezuela.  After telling her I was sorry for the mess, and asking if her family was ok over there, which she obviously appreciated my concern, I asked her if she thought Trump or the US was to blame for the conditions in Venezuela.  “Oh, no, this has been going on for many years!  The US has done nothing to cause the poverty, starvation, and political corruptenss that has brought our country down!”

So while you may be right, my opinion may be as biased as yours is off the deep end, I would readily trust the opinion of a person who has lived there, and still has family there over either mine or yours.

ETA: I was also in Cuba for a few hours today, witnessing first hand how prosperous THEIR country is, saw all the new buildings being built, all the infrastructure, all the nice cars.  Oh no, wait, that was the US still.  What I witnessed in Cuba looked more like a country torn apart by its leadership, where most of the common people had little to nothing, where one cannot even take their currency out of the country (CUC, which is only for tourists to use while in the country, and cannot be traded in banks outside the country).  I don’t know what your travel experience is, but unless you have personally spent some time in Venezuela, getting to know the culture and the people, then I seriously doubt that your opinion is any more accurate than mine.  Because I HAVE been in some of the countries of which I speak (not Venezuela, because I was strongly encouraged NOT to go 2 years ago when I was in a neighboring country).

And it’s not that I have “strong feelings” about socialism, other than I have never seen it be a successful way of running ANY country/culture in history.

By the way, those who oppose the Chavez/Maduro socialist regime are called (by the government's goons) "squalids," and they're routinely harassed, threatened, discriminated against at work, and often badly beaten.  So yeah, it's all phony and all Trump's fault, yak yak yak.
