Hello, I am a 20 year old German dude who has just finished my apprenticeship and received my examination certificate for the profession of toolmaker. I plan on moving to California where my

girlfriend lives. I would love some advice on where to start and what to do. Marriage is our last resort if nothing else works. Thanks to all for any help.

Marriage is the last option because you want to be together with her or marriage is the last option because you want to find out how to move to California?

Marriage in order to obtain residency in the US is considered fraud, so it's a little unclear what your ultimate goal is here. I'm not questioning the validity of your relationship, but you do have to prove to USCIS that the main reason you are coming is because you want to live with your US citizen wife, not just because you want to live and work and the US.

Got it. So, if you want to be able to work as soon as you arrive in the US, you would need to marry and then apply for a CR-1 spousal visa. This visa will allow you to work as soon as you're admitted to the US and you will have the status of legal permanent resident.

You can marry anywhere, it can be in the US, Germany, a third country. Anywhere as long as the marriage is valid. The "90 day fiance" way (lol) is the K-1 fiance visa, which does not allow you to work right away and requires you to get married in the US. You could do either option but most people recommend the spousal visa as it doesn't have the limbo period of waiting around during Adjustment of Status where you aren't able to work.

It is a thing but I dont believe your occupation or education qualifies. So nope. Work visas are limited and hard to get.

Why do you think people don't just casually move to the US? Because there is only very few options and marriage to the US citizen is the easiest and best one.

You would need a US employer who would apply for a work visa on your behalf.  With your education, you would not qualify for one.

Marriage is your only option to move to California.

It's 90 day fiance, marriage, then adjustment of status for a green card or getting marry somewhere other than the US and applying for a spousal visa.  Those are your two realistic options.  You don't have another option based on your background.

See above answers.

Work visas are usually for highly skilled professionals, or for people who are already working at an American company abroad and get transferred to a US office. Technically, you could attempt to find a job doing one of those options, it's not impossible, but it's very difficult and competitive and such jobs are in short supply. The company would have to sponsor you visa and that is costly and not offered by many employers.

Your only realistic options, based on the situation you're in right now and the reason you want to come here (since the reason is to be with your girlfriend), would be the fiance or spousal visa.

Alright thank you. Now just to check, there really isn't another way? Say I just wanted to move there to live and work and she wasn't in the picture.

US immigration doesn't work that way.  There are many people who want to move here to live and work.  If it was that simple, why the hell would people wait up to 24 years to immigrate to the US legally?
