I would be more paranoid being the census taker ..

https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/immigrants-in-the-united-states

Immigrants in the United States contribute billions of dollars in taxes.

  • Immigrant-led households across the United States contributed a total of $223.6 billion in federal taxes and $104.6 billion in combined state and local taxes in 2014.
  • Undocumented immigrants in the United States paid an estimated $11.7 billion in combined state and local taxes in 2014. Their estimated contribution would rise to $13.9 billion if they could receive legal status.
  • DACA recipients paid an estimated $2 billion in combined state and local taxes in 2016.

As consumers, immigrants add hundreds of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy.

  • In the United States, residents of immigrant-led households had $926.9 billion in collective spending power (after-tax income) in 2014.

Immigrant entrepreneurs in the United States generate tens of billions of dollars in business revenue.

  • 3.3 million immigrant business owners accounted for 20.3 percent of all self-employed U.S. residents in 2015 and generated $72.3 billion in business income.
  • In 2015, immigrants accounted for 21.9 percent of all business owners in 50 of the largest U.S. metropolitan areas

Great links, but total hypotheses on illegal immigrants, which is what I was referring to.  I did not feel the need to make that clear, because I have nothing against legal immigrants, which I am sure is backed up by most everyone here on VJ.

I seriously doubt the numbers postulated about illegals and taxes.  Heck, we don’t even have a good idea how many illegals there are in the US.  And we darn sure don’t know how they spend their money nor how much in taxes they spend.  But I would offer my own hypothesis that the smaller the illegal family unit in the US is, the larger the sums of money sent outside the country to support their homeland families.

Yes, illegal immigrants pay sales taxes when they buy stuff.  Not much of a way around that.  But state and federal income taxes?  Not so much.

I know there is a lot of bs in Washington. But the Census was created with good intent by the founding fathers. And it probably served  its purpose well until WWII when the 1940 Census information was used against Japanese in America, even US born citizens.

I say anwer how many live live in your household. Massachusetts actually lost a seat in Congress because of population shifts. I vote and I want to be counted. I want my state to get its fair share of Federal Funds. I’m not so paranoid that I worry about answering a few question and suddenly everyone is out to get me, but to each their own.

Everyone with a lick of sense would want their vote counted.  I know I do as well.

Trouble is, as I have said here many times over the years about the census (and polls, for that matter)... I have NEVER in my adult life received one to fill out, nor has anyone ever knocked on my door to take a tally.

It does seem like most of it is politically motivated. The people are more important than the party. Too bad we don’t elect politicians who have this view. I’m the odd man out here. I think a good idea is a good idea regardless of which party came up with it.

No, you’re NOT the odd man out.  I think the majority of Americans feel the same way.  Too bad we are very far from what our elected politicians want.  Or so it seems.

Politicians promise the moon to get elected. They hit a few issues important to the wealthy so that they get their contributions. They also have to hit a few of the right spots with the general population, that’s where the majority of the votes come from. It’s impossible to keep everyone happy.

I’ve always been curious what would happen if government was run like a business. Back in the day I would have liked to have seen what Iacocca could do. I actually like the idea of seeing a businessman have a shot at running the country. And believe it or not, there was a time when I thought Trump would be a good choice.

Having said that, I don’t think that he has screwed up the country the way some think. He hasn’t started WWIII, he isn’t machine gunning border crossers, he hasn’t nuked North Korea. Take away his arrogance, big mouth and Twitter, and he would be viewed in a different light. I agree with his tough stance on some of the issues we are facing. Not a dictatorship, but standing firm on what you believe is best. But do it for the good of the country and it’s people, not to fuel your ego.  Carry yourself with poise and dignity. You’re the leader of the Free World. As my uncle who was a very successful businessman used to say, you get more bees with honey than you do poop. Be firm, polite and respectful and you’ll get much of what you want.

I don’t think Hillary would have been a good President. I think if Trump could check his ego, he could be good.

I agree with you, except that when I first heard Trump was running, I thought it was just a publicity stunt or similar.  I hate his tweets.  His arrogance... that’s probably from his status as a billionaire.  Not desirable, but understandable.

I really wanted to see Ross Perot win back in the day, for the same reasons you mention.  If a person has the ability to become a billionaire, (s)he probably has a good enough head to run the country.

And I also think Hillary would have been horrible for our country.  I have been knowing about her and her husband since I lived in AR when they came to be in power, and I don’t know if there is a more corrupt couple in our nation.  Though I disagree with his socialist-like ideas, I would have voted for Bernie over Hillary any day.

My family has always received one, and I expect we'll receive one this time. I remember back in the day it would stir up such a frenzy in the religious-right community with a paranoia about answering it. Usually something to do about being rounded up into camps or some other nefarious purpose. If it wasn't the form itself it was the fear of a census taker showing up at the door. I can remember kids in our church being told that they should hide immediately and do not open the door or speak to a census taker. Utter nonsense like that.

Don't honestly recall a census taker showed up, but mom would rarely open the door anyway.

I voted for Perot. I wish Iacocca would have given it a try back In the day. And I really thought highly of Trump when he was on the rise. I still have The Art of the Deal which I purchased and read shortly after it was published. I was a big Iacocca fan too. I still have his autobiography, also purchased and read when it was first published.

I voted for Perot as well.  Had a handful of friends and family members who worked for him, and had nothing but great things to say about him.

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

I think most of his supporters here do not approve of his bombastic tweets. Certainly his tweets attacking Mattis are cringe worthy

bombastic is too soft of a word to describe the tweets (and obviously not his behavior). I would say he is (from his words/tweets/actions)

1. irresponsible (i will own the shutdown, the buck stops with everyone etc)

2. pathological liar (politifact has all the lies)

3. childish (read his statements, tweets, behavior - name calling?)

4. unremorseful (caught lying but never repented?)

5. a bully

6. a demagogue

(i can back these up with evidence and examples - definitely not Alternative Facts, or Truthful Hyperbole  ).

Given all those traits, i have to wonder, if one (his supporters mainly) can put up with an entity like him, one can definitely put up with a lot of other characters (which clearly do not embody all the bad traits listed above). And suddenly supporting other entities does not look bad at all.

Even with all of that, I'd take Trump for 3 terms over Hillary for a month.
