What should I do?

Hey guys,

I received my green card in the middle of October. I applied to register for selective service on the 30th of October. Since then I’ve received nothing back from selective service and it’s been around 90 days now. I tried contacting them but with the government shut down, there’s nobody there to speak to. What should I do?

unrelated question, do I need a SSN to be able to work? I never filed to get one and was wondering if I should.

Thank you

if you are not required to register, you do receive a letter stating so. If you are required to register, i think you have done what you have been required, no more steps.

SS# is required for work, absolutely, no work around it. With you GC, you can go to a SSA office and apply for one.

Have you checked this site yet?

Only your Green Card is needed since it is a List A I-9 document: https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/acceptable-documents/list-documents/form-i-9-acceptable-documents But some users have reported that getting paid is delayed until a SSN is issued; @JFH's personal experience with this:

It's a gray area. @JFH was able to work but payment was delayed. Also, there are USCs without SSNs:

@accumbyte this is an unusal situation, best is to just get one and problem solved. he has a green card and why bother to not have one. SS# is required in a lot of other places.
