I-90 - apply before 6 months?

My 10 year green card is due to expire in October 2019...so around ten months from now. The US immigration website says that you should apply 6 months before the card expires. Does it matter if I start the renewal process prior to the 6 month window?

 

I’m planning to make a trip home to Ireland in May and am worried I may not have the new card back before I travel. Am I likely to run into an issue at an immigration desk, traveling on a green card which expires in a few months?

 

probably being a little paranoid as it looks like an easy process, but want to be prepared for what comes next.
