The DMV is funny. On one page it mentions that appointments are necessary at regular field offices: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffdl07 On another page there is an exception for Saturday service: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/fo/fo_sat_offices/

DMVs weren’t open on Saturdays when we arrived, that’s fairly recent, but in any case you can’t walk in for DL tests (except at the dedicated DL DMVs of which there are only 3 in the whole state.)

Walk-ins for Saturday service are accepted for the following:

  • Submitting DL application
  • Taking knowledge tests
  • Etc.

Behind-the-wheel tests always require an appointment (and never done on Saturdays, only Mon-Fri). I know the foregoing by my personal experience and re-confirming it with DMV employees on different occasions.

He has some leads for jobs in Texas and Oklahoma, so I am not sure where they will end up, so it may be difficult to show Michigan residency to get a DL.

Fair point; OP did say he's "not sure where they will end up." CA is just 1 of 50+ options.

I just read what he wrote and took it as one of those 2 vs 1 of 50. :D  But obviously options are there.
