Getting Married Twice

So my wife and I got married here in the states this past November.  Once my wife has her AP card or green card we are going back to the Philippines to get married again so her family can attend the wedding as they couldn't attend the one here in the states.  My question is can we legally get married again or must we only hold a marriage ceremony without legally getting married again?  Also depending on the answer do I need to do the ROM for the marriage in the states or can we just get a marriage license there for the Philippines like we have the one here in the states?  Thanks.

You can get married as many times you want no issue. many people on K1 have two weddings. Have fun.

Same situation. As what expert members here said to my thread about this second wedding in ph..its not gonna be a wedding and it would be a renewal of vows in Philippines which is make sense..and yep all filipino who got married here need to do ROM and so that the marriage here will be register/recognized in the Philippines.

Only one marriage is a legal one. Try getting a marriage license and telling them you are already married...

The other would be a celebration / renewal of vows.

 

ROM would be based on where the legal marriage occurred.

Ok thanks for explanations guys.  I guess we will just have a celebration / renewal of vows for her family and friends.  Also, for the ROM of marriage does anyone know about how long it may take to get back the original birth certificate we have to submit?  We only have one left and I know she will need that for other things so we need it back soon.

Generally, if you do the ROM in person then you can get everything settled the same day.

If you mail it in, time varies by the embassy/consulate that handles the ROM. But expect a few to several weeks.

Photocopy the original birth certificate for the future.. and if you dont mind spending some money you can order it in Philippines and ask your spouse family to send it via Philippines Post "it would take 2 weeks for regular mail and 5 days to one week for priority mail" and i think you could also request a psa bc from Philippines embassy.

There is a difference between getting married more than once (while still married) and having a wedding ceremony.   What most do is having a renewal of vows wedding ceremony  for family in the Philippines.

 

You DO NOT get another marriage license in the Philippines, you are ALREADY married.   You just have a renewal of vows wedding ceremony.

 

We did this and the minister performed the service for us ...  no documentation!   We had a party and all had a good time.

6-8 weeks is what the consulate says for getting ROM completed and your documents back.

 

You keep the original and use certified copies (county recorder issues those)

I think they call the second marriage a renewal of vows.  Most don't have to fill out all the paperwork for the second "marriage" but other than that it is identical.  No need for a new marriage license in the Philippines.  In fact, I doubt if they can get one since they won't be able to produce CENOMARs.  Why pay those fees anyway?  Everything else is a full blown wedding.

I have a question @hank_ me and my husband planning to renew our vows this year in Philippines and i need clarification if we could do it in the church and if the church gonna need documents from us? Like our marriage certificate?  Thank you!

If ROM wasn't completed then they could get a CENOMAR still. But they would still need to lie and say they weren't married...and then you're opening pandora's box of troubles.

That is a question for the church.   If you explain it is a renewal of vows then they should not require any documents    bring your existing certificate just in case

Depends on the church.   We had a fancy "venue" deal ... the minister came there to complete the ceremony, we didn't show him a marriage certificate or anything .. he knew we were married, besides there is nothing"legal" about a renewal of vows to require documentation.       You need to ask your minister at your church this question.
