I have interview next month! What happens if the president decides that he likes to shut down the government over his dream wall! Should i consider the interview cancelled and if it goes on pending? How longer could it take to be re-scheduled? Would they let me know there is a change of date in advance while they are shut down? I mean what should i be expecting? Any idea?

Congressional authorization for government spending is set to end Friday, January 19, 2018. To avoid a Federal government shutdown, Congress would need to pass a temporary or long-term spending bill before midnight.

If Congress is not able to pass a spending bill today, certain government agencies would temporarily close or reduce operations. Generally, non-essential Federal employees would be furloughed, but operations related to national security and law enforcement would remain active.

Here is what you need to know about how the shutdown would impact immigration-related agencies and offices:

Department of Homeland Security

USCIS: USCIS is funded by filing fees, so the USCIS is expected to continue to process immigration applications as normal. Some field offices have already issued statements indicating they will maintain regular operations.

USCIS carries on rain or shine because a) its funding doesn't come from appropriations and b) its employees are "essential" so can't be furloughed.  That said, your "dream wall" dig is neither witty nor necessary.

B) is untrue. 

Even essential employees have been furloughed.  If not then the FAA wouldnt have had shutdowns causing a huge ruckus. They ended up working with the idea they may or may not be paid. 

While certain homeland security is essential, most of the USCIS is not.  However since they are self funded they normally continue.

yes, USCIS is funded by private means (our fees)  and not part of the federal budget,  but some offices can be closed if they operate in a federal building if the building itself is closed

But it isn’t in itself essential to facilitate legal immigration to the US. US Citizenship and Immigration Services will largely be unaffected by the shutdown simply because it doesn’t get its money from Congress; it’s funded by the fees it charges applicants. But companies seeking work visas for their employees might run into trouble, because the Department of Labor office that needs to approve their petition would be closed.

Overseas, consular offices, while they could stay open over a brief shutdown by running off fee money, could end up being closed if the shutdown is prolonged — making it impossible for people in those countries to get approved to come to the US until the government reopened.

And while the US Refugee Admissions Program isn’t technically subject to shutdown, the Obama administration stopped bringing refugees to the US during the 2013 shutdown anyway, because of the anticipated difficulty getting Social Security cards and other vital resources to refugees once they arrived in the United States. Feeding refugees is considered an essential function of the State Department, but resettling them permanently isn’t on the same level.

But does the NVC shut down is the big question. I’m at pretty sure some embassies may even close temporarily.

Yes the consulates and NVC have shut down.   The NVC frequently has snow days as well.

Yes this is a government funded service paid for by tax dollars.  If the government shuts down, then the SSA shuts down.

I'd like to remind people that it's not just immigrants or those of us who use the federal government who are affected by a government shut down. The workers are also affected.  Suddenly they have no income, no way to pay bills, or feed their families until they can go back to work.  So while it may suck for us not to be able to do things or bring our loved ones; it also affects those who are already here.

Odd of shutdown is low in my opinion.  Stay come and cool.
