The National Grid energy requirement for November saw both on and offshore wind produce more than the required demand on 20 of 30 days.

Powering 109% of the total energy requirement, the new figures set a new record for wind generation in Scotland.

Gina Hanrahan, head of policy at WWF Scotland said: “Wind power breaking through the magic 100% threshold is truly momentous.

“For months output has flirted around the 97% mark, so it’s fantastic to reach this milestone. It’s also worth noting that 20 out of 30 days wind production outstripped demand.

“Most of this is onshore wind, which we know is popular, cheap and effective. But the UK Government needs to allow it to compete with other technologies, by unlocking market access for onshore wind if it’s to realise its full potential.”

It's so flat and windy in parts of west Texas that the town chicken can end up laying the same egg 4 times.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I agree, I am all for renewable energy with hydro being my first choice, but I am curious, how many wind generators were required to reach that goal?

While at the outset, this seems like a great accomplishment,  we need to ask:

1) How much did it cost to build the turbines?

2) What is the lifespan of a turbine?

3) What are the associated maintenance costs?

My experience with them is that they are VERY expensive to erect and maintain, so much so that when they break, they are usually just abandoned.  Hawaii is a great example as to how well they (don't) work.  But at least they went from killing birds and bats to becoming safe roosts.

I remember a story a while back. They wanted to put a wind farm near the Kennedy compound hyannis port. The valiant knights of all things liberal went to court and sued to block it. Becuse it would mess up their view. Maybe not the exact details,  but I a. Limited to a phone right now

3 megawatts per Enercon ep2 which costs around 5 million USD.

Maybe they can just throw them in a lake.

Btw, there are about 5,600 turbines in 460 wind farms on shore in Scotland right now with something like 9.5 GW of installed capacity (I think the units of the number used in the OP linked story is wrong, I believe it should be MW-h instead of MW).

Slightly, but I don't think the capacity has increased that much more in a little over a year.  Regardless, renewables are a good thing, and apparently Scotland is a place with a lot of wind energy.  Like I said, my preference is hydro, but that is not doable everywhere either.  All forms of energy have their pros and cons, so a good mix is probably the best path.

something like this in the US would be great if there are sufficiently available air flows in the Mid-West .. .there are miles and miles of nothing, surrounded by farmland no fear of offending anybodies aesthetics, centrally located for distribution ...

Capacity has doubled in a year

So the capacity now is over 18 GW?  Please provide the reference for that as everything I have found is a bit dated.
