Bank account - can I be added to my husband's?

I haven't been in the USA for long but I'm really eager to get things going as I'm getting bored sitting around.

I'm still waiting for my social security number to come in the mail. I need to open a bank account asap as I have work lined up, can I be added to my husband's account whilst waiting?

Also when my SSN does come through, is it easy enough to just walk into most banks and open an account?

All banks are different. Your husbands bank can speak with the both of you and tell you if they allow it or not.

Yes, most banks only need a photo ID and Social Security card to open an account.

You don’t need the SSN card or a bank account to start work. I had neither when I started work. I got my SSN card in the mail a week after I started working. As soon as I had it, I opened an account and even got a credit card (with a very low initial limit) right away with Bank of America.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

You should be able to get added to husband's existing account, but that is totally dependent on what his bank lets you do. Go in and ask to be added.  They need a SSN to report the interest earned to the IRS, but with him being the primary account holder, they have his SSN and ought to let you call it in when it arrives. That's what I did at my bank.

Banks have the own rules and policy, so there is no uniformed answer.

Small local banks tend to be easier to work with, vs large national banks.

I bank at BOA, I have a personal banker, I just call him and he adds or make changes or set up my new bank accounts, he even knows what PIN # I like to use, easy smeasy.

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

So this entirely depends on your bank. For my bank, I added my SO before we were married, they just required ID (their passport) and proof of address (usually a utility bill). We just put our internet bill (although our gas/electric wouldve been just as easy) in both our names and that was enough for the bank.

To update, I went into chase bank today and asked to open a checking account.

I had my passport, SSN number card, green card and one proof of address and they said I can't open one as I need more proof of identity.

Did you ask what they suggested as an additional proof?

Go to another bank.

Do you have a joint account with spouse yet? That's pretty important for AOS (K1s) and Removing Conditions...the earlier done the better.

They wanted another photo ID and another proof of address. So I have to get a state ID tomorrow and then try again once I have that. But I probably wouldn't try chase again to be honest.

I didn't ask about being added to the joint account.

Forget Chase.  Go someplace more accommodating.

I walked away from Chase myself after I found them most annoying.

Go back to report that to Management, then take your business elsewhere. :)

The most golden words in such situations are "I'd like to speak with a supervisor, please."
