I-864. How often is it enforced?

Whether or not its enforced shouldn't matter. The fact is it CAN be enforced. I would never ever sign something that I couldn't actually agree to, especially with something like the government. Always go with the assumption that it CAN and WILL be enforced.

If you find it terrifying I think that may be indicative of how you’re actually feeling about getting married. Yes, the 864 is a serious and legally binding document. So is a marriage certificate. My husband has no hesitation about signing one for me and situation reversed neither would I for him. We are that sure about each other. Wouldn’t have gotten married if not. Marriage is not supposed to be a “we’ll see how it goes” kind of thing. You want to be very sure. Divorce is very difficult - especially if the union produces children.

A couple of years ago on VJ i heard a member claim that the government has only pursued a claim against a sponsor a handful of times. I don't know if that was true then and/or whether things have changed since then. It does seem as if it's more relevant in divorce cases. In cases of divorce, however, there are lots of financial risks, not just i864 concerns.
