One way ticket? Oh

I have received my K1 visa approval from Sydney. Went to see about booking a one way ticket to US and was told i had to buy a return ticket or i may not be allowed to leave Australia. If I am moving to the US to get married to the love of my life why on earth will I need a return ticket .

A one-way ticket is fine. You are immigrating.  Purchase whichever one is less expensive.

If a one way ticket is cheaper then buy that.  If a two way ticket is cheaper then buy that.  I have never heard that Australia will not allow you to leave if you don't have a roundtrip ticket.

You could use it to go back for a visit. 

 

I got a round trip as it was too short notice to get a cheap one way but booked the return leg for way in the future when I was looking to visit home anyway, then booked a one way back for after the holidays using miles whilst it was far enough in advance to be cheap. Having separate tickets for my first visit home also allowed me to have a new passport done whilst I was back home as well instead of risking having it sent by mail internationally. Saved me money in the long run.

I agree.  When my fiancé came over, roundtrips were cheaper, we set the return leg out as far as the airlines allowed (6 months), and when that came around we canceled, but the credit was still there which we used a few months later for her first trip back home after she received her GC.

Who told you that you have to buy return? The only reason you have to buy a return ticket is for non immigrant visas, which the person must have assumed? Just go ahead and get the one way ticket, you have the visa in your passport and that will be accepted at the airport when you check in.

you can cancel and get credits? it means the purchased ticket was refundable ? normally if its refundable you still need a valid (unforeseen) reason for them to grant refund right?

 

im curious about this, hope you can enlighten, as whenever we buy ticket, its just always refundable within 24hrs, unless you pay extra?

We did not buy a refundable ticket, so there was a cancelation fee, but the remaining value remained as a credit for another purchase later.  If the new ticket costs less than the credit than it works out nicely, but the point is that even with most non-refundable tickets you won’t lose the entire value of the ticket with a cancelation.  Of course this varies by carrier.

 

As to someone coming on a K1 on a round trip ticket needing to cancel the return leg, if you don’t then your name may show up on a list somewhere as have left the country which may cause headaches later on while working through the AOS.  If USCIS is notified that an immigrant that came on a K1 left the country, then they may consider the AOS application abandoned even if the person did not actually leave.  That may not happen if one simply decides not to show up for the return flight, but why chance that potential headache.

I have cancelled flights and been able to get a credit.  Some airlines charge a cancellation fee, some charge a change fee. As long as the ticket itself is worth more than either or both of those, you get a credit towards a flight generally within 1 year of thr original flight. 

 

Right now i have a $250 Air Canada credit.  It's $150 to change flights so that gives me $100 toward a new ticket in a year.  Better than a kick in the pants with a steel toed boot!
