Send second application as first was sent to wrong location?

Hello fellow visajourneyers! I'd like to get some help with this. Perhaps some of you had similar situations and experiences.

So. I totally ****** up. Sent my application I-751 to the wrong location (California) as I had prepared it early September, didn't check the website for any changes but the filing location had changed in the meantime (am now supposed to send it to Dallas).

It's a bit of a mess. Here are my options:

1. Wait and see if they return my application to me and file it again at the right location. Drawback on this: my gc expires the 4th of November so that leaves me a bit nervous.

2. Send in a new application, which I have already prepared, with a note attached about the earlier application sent to the wrong location. Drawback: if they don't send the first application back but forward it to the right location it would be confusing to have two applications out there. Might even be a reason to be rejected? And they might cash two checks. Unless I cancel the first one but then I miss the chance of it being forwarded.

What is wisdom in a situation like this? I have a few more hours to decide..... If I send the second application in today it would get there the 2nd of November, just in time.

I wonder if they have a window in which they allow errors like this. I saw they did allow for some time after a location change in 2015 but I could not find anything on that about the September 2018 change.

I would wait to see whether they send you a receipt notice or they reject it and return it to you.  If they return it to you, just resubmit to the correct address with an explanation......

Thank you for taking the time to answer. I would be okay with that time wise? As they have received it before the deadline, even if it was in the wrong location?

Even late filing is accepted with a good explanation.  If you send another one now, there is a chance that your original one would be accepted along with the 2nd one......Personally, I would just wait a few weeks to see if you get a receipt.  If my memory is correct, someone else mailed their I-751 to the wrong place not long ago, but they received a receipt for acceptance.  Did you send a check?  If so, I would watch my bank account to see if they take the money.....

I tend toward waiting, as I understand that the moment they receive the application - even if it’s filed to the wrong location - counts as the moment they received it. So time wise I should be good, I hope.

 I did send a check and so far it hasn’t been cashed. It has been 8 days and I have read that others are waiting for their checks to be cashed. I will continue watching. 😰

You can wait and see and they will probably forward it to the right location. But for peace of mind, if I were you, I would cancel the first check and send a new application.

I agree with above. Cancel the first check and they will have no choice but to reject your first application. Get your second one to the correct location. Then you don't have to wait and hope they figure it out.

They should send it back or reroute. Late filling is acceptable with explanation, too. Call them up and ask to speak to an officer and explain the story, they might be able to tell you what will happen to the package.

I have good news. Called USCIS again just now; they have forwarded my case to Texas, accepted my fee and I should get a notice within the next 7 days.

Soooooo relieved and glad I decided to wait and not complicate the matters by sending a new application out! Phew, wiping the sweat from my brow!

My guess is that they allow for some time after a location change has been made for applications sent to a former location. I did read that was their policy in 2015 but couldn't get any information for the recent change.

Yes I was a bit worried though.... but canceling might have complicated matters more.

Great news! Glad to see it finally worked out.
