When used in the literal sense, landslide is quite clear and defined.  When attempting to use it in an election, the edges blur.  The term is essentially useless in politics.  “Overwhelming majority” could be 999/1, or 600/400, or 550/450... even 510/490.  In all cases, the numbers indicate that the first wins.  The term “landslide” is totally subjective.  

 

For some, the land slid right out from under Hillary, and she crumbled and fell.  For others, she NEARLY won.  And for a few, she won the popular vote, and was cheated out of the WH.  It’s all relative to one’s political leanings.  (Wonder what she did with that second, multi-million dollar mansion she bought for her secret service detail during the election?)

  Landslide is somewhat subjective, but 2016 is among the lowest electoral college margins ever. Unless you are saying that most presidential elections have been won by a landslide. In which case it doesn't really mean much anyway.

 

  In my lifetime, I would say both of Reagan's victories, GHWB's, both of Clinton's and Obama's first win were "landslides". Obama's second term margin of 332-206 is debatable, but I do recall a lot of conservatives taking exception to the description of 2012 as a landslide.

I feel ya dawg.  Not arguing with you by any means.  Just saying it doesn't matter what words are used, the numbers matter.

 

In 2008, I thought Obama was going to be good for the country, so I wasn't really paying much attention to politics.  Good thing I didn't buy any lottery tickets or stocks back then...
