That is incorrect. The petitioner’s family (children in this case) do NOT count as part of the co-sponsor’s household. Neither does the petitioner herself. The co-sponsor’s income only needs to cover his/her own household plus the immigrant. 

Their children don’t need to be sponsored as they are US citizens already.

Who must or must not be included in the household size (which dictates the minimum income requirement) is stated directly ion the I-864 and its instructions. Follow that and you will reach the correct number.

Nowhere in the instructions does it say to list the petitioner or their family (although it's possible for either to be included via the rules outlined in the instructions).
