That's what I'd gathered. Shame.

Out of curiosity, do I absolutely need to get a stamp, even if I don't have plans to travel any time soon? Or is it just recommended so that I have proof of status? I'll probably still go get one, for this reason, but the idea of handing over my green card (albeit an expired one) in exchange for a stamp still makes me very nervous! I was really hoping they'd come through with those 18 month letters 😏

with new administration, I would advise you to get the stamp as soon as your extension letter expires. Peace of mind. Although you do not need it if you do not intend to travel out of US.

My wife got her extension letter yesterday. January 2017 filer, GC expiration in March 2017, meaning this "extension" really only adds a month. Fortunately we got her passport/visa stamped before the end of the original 1-year letter, so she'll be good into 2019. Kinda pointless to sent 18-month extensions to people who have been waiting for 18 months...

Yeah, kind of useless having a letter that's only valid for an extra month. Even if I got one today, it'd only add an extra 6 months (probably still not enough to get me through to the 10-year GC!). Judging by your own timeline, seems like my chances of getting a new extension letter any time soon are slim.

Sounds like I'd be best giving up on the dream of the 18-month letter and just getting myself a stamp.

Sounds like good advice!

Do you know if it is possible to get an unrestricted SS card after your green card has expired, but before your extension letter has "expired"? I suspect the answer is it is possible, but the SS office staff might be difficult to convince that is the case...

Yup, exactly. A valid green card (including one with an extended expiration due to the extension letter) should be all that they need to issue an unrestricted SS card. I think they are generally fairly familiar with this combination of documents, but you are always at the whim of whoever you get plus maybe their supervisor.

It is their passive aggressive method of encouraging people to apply for citizenship as soon as they're eligible (so more fees for USCIS, woo hoo!). Just kidding- I think...

I have suspected this also, just received our 18 month extension, guess it is just going to be a waiting game

Actually I think this is bad bad news (18 months extension), this will allow time for the Trump administration to finalize their immigration policies and to modify Homeland Securities' computer systems to cross reference other government agencies' computer systems so they can do massive rejects on green card applicants on the slightest hint of improprieties (eg applying for ObamaCare for one), even for existing permanent green card holders, they may be primed for deportation once they are found guilty of something trivial. For existing I751 applicants, it's a good idea to delay replying to your ROEs, beyond 2020 if possible.

IMHO - USCIS could get a significant reduction in workload if conditional green cards were good for 3 years - then the holder could file for OPT #1: Combo I751/N400 filing or OPT #2: I751. If it's about fees, charge a higher one for OPT #1.

ROC has nothing to do with a public charge concern, so that policy change consideration has no impact on the ROC process.

People going for ROC already have a green card, so there's no way to "reject" them.

Denied ROCs doesn't automatically make one deportable...it's a multi-year process involving the courts to remove LPR status from an individual. Policy changes cannot do that sort of thing....it would require a change in laws (plus a massive government effort).

There is no good reason to delay responding to an RFE for ROC.

Once a temporary green card holder is found guilty of getting welfare, ROC will be denied and green card will become invalid, that means leaving the country immediately, this will not involve any courts.

This do not need Congress to pass any laws, only Presidential directive to USCIS.

The revised instructions do not affect the public charge determination for people already in the U.S. who apply for a green card (i.e., those who seek to adjust to lawful permanent resident status), because the State Department does not process these applications. Nor do these instructions apply to lawful permanent residents seeking U.S. citizenship.

the state dept doesnt process ROC.

lUSCIS is under DHS, not State Dept, but it doesn't matter, USCIS can reject ROCs for those receving welfare benefits, and let the green cards expire. Why is it so hard to understand?

Because it's not true...legally obtained benefits (which is different than those obtained via fraud, which would be an issue) is not a cause for denial of ROC or revocation of a green card. It would require a change in law to do so.

An EO or PP or even a policy change cannot change this. Courts are involved when somebody chooses to contest a decision by USCIS.
